Microsoft’s Surface Pro iPad killer to start at $899

“The common consensus in the tech world is that we’ll have to wait till Microsoft releases the Surface Pro with full Windows 8 before making a judgement on Microsoft’s dreams of squashing the iPad,” Buster Heine reports for Cult of Mac.

MacDailyNews Take: Why wait? Microsoft won’t squash the iPad.

“Well, things aren’t looking too promising because Microsoft just announced that the Surface Pro will be available in January 2013 except it’s going to be expensive, like holy-crap-I-just-blew-$900 expensive,” Heine reports. “Yep, the baseline model of the Microsoft Surface Pro will be priced at $899. For the nearly the price of two iPads with Retina display you’ll be able to buy a 64GB version of the Microsoft Surface Pro that comes with regular Windows 8 rather than the crummy Windows RT that comes with the Surface RT. Oh, and that $900 you’re going to shell out on the Surface Pro doesn’t include one of their really awesome Touch Cover keyboards. You’ll have to buy that separately for $129.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yup, “really awesome” at splitting open and spitting out wires:

  1. What is truly scary is to envision Balmer & co. Toiling away now at their rendition of a “Surface Mini”. “We can integrate a ‘3D’ kick stand which will actually house all of the internal componentry we lost room for in the smaller form factor. The kickstand will be fixed, non moveable, kind of like a thick slice of pie slapped on the back of a box of Russell stover chocolates. Mmmmm. I like our strategy. Like it lots.” Chomping and chewing sounds emanate from behind closed doors…

  2. Its not an ipad killer, its a Microsoft killer. I feel so bad for Ballmer, he is really trying. I think they should concentrate on what works which is the xbox.
Time to give the OS business to the cloud.

  3. Microsoft is trying to hedge their bets by making a device that fits all needs. A tablet that can be used with a touch interface and also convert to a laptop like device that will run all windows apps.

But until developers re-write their software to work with a touch interface, it will remain a jack of all trades, master of none.

  4. The truth of the matter is Microsoft is a has-been company who can’t survive without the Windows (TM) drug. I would rather work on an Apple ][ than use Windows, the worlds most bloated ass-gaping software available.

Microsoft doesn’t give a rats ass about its users. They have been ripping users off for years and now that the money pond is drying up, they want public support. Well fuck you Microsoft.

Who can forget throughout the 1990’s the endless blue-screens-of-death, the hopeless plug and pray and terrible support if something goes wrong?

Microsoft deserves everything they get. They make shit products backed up by a shit CEO.

I can’t believe anyone in the IT world would still believe the dribble coming out of Microsofts fluffy asshole.

  5. Yep, their “base” version that doesn’t do much and requires add-on’s at $899. And that’s the price that everybody will be quoting rather than the REAL price.

    Don’t forget the Microsoft tax.
