Our largest applications used both Oracle and PostgreSQL, each for different types of data. PostgreSQL’s housekeeping functions and usability posed problems for a system handling terabytes of data daily. Last I heard the vendor was working on eliminating the PostgreSQL portion.

Apple used to make some great servers and server software we always had them. A shame they don’t make those big sleek mothers anymore. They played nice with any computer accessing them, Mac or PC. And were not so quirky and clunky as the Winduhz servers.

I’ll never understand why people use Oracle and pay these exorbitant licensing fees rather than use PostgreSQL. There’s so much waste in corporate America. I mean, I do understand. I’ve worked with and for many of these companies as a consultant, so I understand the blame game, but it still boggles my mind. Can’t sue the authors of PostgreSQL in case of failure. ipso facto.

We never went with exchange, but with Xserver and snow leopard server, unlimited client access for $999. There is no way in hell that you can beat that deal.

I am going to be one of their customers that they lose entirely. I run my company on the Microsoft Dynamics ERP system. If I upgrade to the newest version I Will have to upgrade to the newest MS server AND all my client PCs. On top of that, I will have to keep paying licensing for older servers to run some legacy software.

I am fed up, and will be switching to a hosted platform (probably Netsuite), and will dump most of our pc clients for macs. Also will go probably with google apps.

My business is small, but even with just 15 users Microsoft will lose about $15-20,000 per year in license fees from us

Cool, just what I need… Another gut punch from Micro$oft. Nitrozac and Snaggy are so right, M$ thinks of us as punching bags. Glad I use paper and pen most of the time. At least they (M$) havent found a way to hijack the o/s of the pen mark two mod one. Of course, if they take away the paper, I’ll be forced to glue strips of bark together for a writing surface. I don’t think Balmer will let me write on his pate.

Exactly! Business customers have become a big focus in the Apple retail stores. Most of them are small businesses, but some not so small. And small businesses can grow into big businesses. Just like the Mac is on fire now with all those iPad and iPhone owners (thanks to the iPod … and Steve), Business could catch on fire with growth in that segment of their business. But that’s going to require more than just retail. It’s going to require dedicated focus to providing for the computing needs of businesses, including administration of the mobile devices that, in many cases, made them Apple customers. What would be the reaction, I wonder, of the business customer with 200 employees in multiple locations, using multiple devices at finding out that he doesn’t need an IT Department. Probably just an IT guy.

No corporation I ever worked for could justify the security risk involved with using Google applications of any kind. Corporate information can be as valuable as gold or diamonds. I don’t think any corporation that values its proprietary information is going to start using Google products. There’s a clear opening here for innovation. Apple needs to bring its productivity suite into the big leagues by releasing a heavy duty enterprise edition. If they don’t, look for independent suppliers of these applications to pop up like mushrooms.

Yes, Oracle charges a license fee for each CPU, so if your database application runs on a virtual server on a 12 core machine you get to pay for a license for each core, whether it ever gets used by that application or not. A $10K per license that can add up to real money.

So it’s actually more expensive for Microsoft’s enterprise “customers,” whether the device is an iPhone/iPad, or a Windows Phone/Surface. Smart move Microsoft.

I guess they figure no one will buy Surface tablets or Nokia phones, so they might as well jack up the “client access” fee for everyone. One major problem… The 15% increase will be offset by an equivalent loss in customers.

It all comes down to (or should) just who exactly are/is Microsloths customers. Same for Giggle.

With Giggle it is a easy question. Advertisers are giggles customers, Giggles product is your private information. Never forget Giggles is in the business of selling you. You could argue that giggle has added manufactures of cheap shit as a customer but you would be wrong. Giggle *gives away* Andriod in order to collect more stuff to sell, which again, is you.

With Microsloth the question is slightly harder to answer. M$ primary customer is manufactures of cheap shit. However, M$ does dabble in trying to make the consumer their customer. They fail miserably in both cases (not $ wise, quality wise).

It makes no difference what Giggle or Microsucksass says or does their business model does not include making the end user happy.

I’m stumped. What the heck does at rosier CAL have to do with iPhone and iPads? These devices aren’t Microsoft clients. They can’t access Microsoft services, except for exchange active sync and who cares if Microsoft wants to charge a license for active sync, there are plenty of alternatives already that corporations use that get around the license issue anyways, because active sync se unity is not anywhere close to being corporate safe. The encryption And authentication mechanisms are substandard so BYOD solutions already use software and gateways that removes the iPhone from direct access to exchange anyways.

I use Google Apps for business, along with the MS products and they are not very good. Google Apps still have a long ways to go.
I say there is room for even an upstart to get in the game and dominate at this stage. The Microsoft stuff is bloated and expensive, and the Google stuff is cheap, and feels cheap. Google Apps is actually pretty awful.
