I bought a case for my iPhone 4S for the simple reason that the smooth glass back of the device meant it was constantly sliding off whatever I placed it on.

I just use the bumper made by apple to protect my 4S, and its plenty good. I love feeling the glass surface and dont want it covered with some plastic film in order to protect it. Not only does it look ugly, it doesnt feel as nice. Had it for almost a year now, no problems. Even after dropping it a couple times, still looks like new and I enjoy it so much.

I use a Coach leather, protects well when not in use and I can enjoy it as intended. No drops from my hand yet, but it’s always a possibility.
Worth it to me, since I find covers to be obtrusive.

My kid has numerous friends who have cracked iPod, IPhone, and iPads due to dropping them and for some reason until this happens, they all think they do not need a case. My kid is the only one among her friends with such a device that looks and works like new.

I had a screen protector on my 3GS do two weeks but it spoilt the gorgeous screen and attracted more fingerprints etc so I took it off. Never bothered with a case and it took several dives. The last one cracking the screen, but i was unlucky to have it fall onto the corner of a brick. I decided at that point rather than getting a new one for about a £20 to upgrade to the 4s. It’s never been in a case and has taken two serious tumbles plus plenty of my so serious ones. One, I accidentally threw it against a brick wall and the other I dropped it onto the patio. Apart from a couple of scuffs on the sides it’s fine. Granted it could have smashed but it didn’t. I think people believe the case is saving their phone when they drop it but most of the time it would have been fine without a case.

We’re caseless when using our iPhones, but use the Sena Ultraslim leather cases when moving around – they are gorgeous.

I’m with you. I find the iPhone very slippery. Although the 4S with it’s squared up sides is less slippery then the 3GS and 2G models that I had previously. I use the rubbery tire tread case that has thick corners. The case makes it a little difficult getting it out of my pocket sometimes but that means it won’t fall out of my shirt pocket also. Over 4 years I have only dropped my phone’s 5 or 6 times. Haven’t broken one yet.Why start now? I’d like to go without the case but I can’t make a case for it.

I’m like you, always conscience that I’m holding 650 euros worth of tech in my hand when I’m using my iPhone. Dropping it is just out of the question and sure, it *could* happen at some point but I’m probably far more likely to trip outside when I’m walking…and I don’t wear a helmet or knee pads because of that possibility, lol. Having said that, I do actually like to wear an non-intrusive case on my 4S, not because I’m afraid of dropping it but because I want it to remain pristine.

It doesn’t surprise me that people in general do drop their phones more or less regularly, having seen them being casually dangled between two fingers and whatnot! Young girls especially tend to do this based on the many YT videos I’ve watched. Yikes!

I have mixed feelings on this.

I carry my phone in the breast pocket of my shirt. The bumper I had on my iPhone 4 provided just enough friction so it wouldn’t slide out when I would bend from the waist. I love the way the iPhone 5 looks and feels so I haven’t handicapped it with a bumper … yet. The first time it falls out is the day I buy a bumper. We’ll see.

I put a bumper on my iPhone 5. It’s more comfortable, doesn’t slide on smooth surface on my car/boat, and has saved it from two drops. I’ll most likely get a Morphie battery case when it comes out.

Uh, nobody purposefully drops their phone. I was out for a walk about a month ago, accidentally caught the power lead to my iPhone, (I had it plugged into an external battery because I hadn’t charged it overnight and I was using the GPS), pulled it out of my pocket, it came off the cable and somersaulted several times on its corners down a steep Tarmac road. It was only the fact that I had a cheap Belkin-style case on it that saved it from a significant amount of damage. I’m sure that those feather-bedded individuals who only ever travel between house-car-office-car-house will manage quite happily without a case. Others who venture out into that thing called ‘countryside’, and actually engage in outdoor pursuits, will feel much happier for having a degree of protection around a very expensive computer. I’m actually waiting for my TakTik waterproof case to arrive; seawater and iPhones are not a happy combination.
Yes, it will make it bulkier, but, you know what? I couldn’t give a shit. It’ll be fully protected from damage, and that’s all that’s important to me.

I plan on protecting my investment. My mother, my wife, and I all use the Griffin Survivor for our iPhone 5 units. Don’t get me wrong, I think about the iPhone without it’s case often, but I’ve always had a case. Plus I like having the liberty of throwing my iPhone if I get really pissed off. Same deal with my iPad 2 (also protected by the Griffin Survivor)

Some of us can’t afford the cost associated with repairs or replacement of our igadgets. I have a lifeproof case on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 3rd generation. Yes, I hate to cover up the beauty of them, but, it’s worth it for the protection. My phone survived a 15 sec bath in 350 degree oil.

In my case (pun intended) the iPhone 3gs got a lot more tiny scratches due to dust and sand between the case and the phone. I’m pretty sure it would look (a lot) better without it but my wife refused me to not use the ‘gift’…

I went for the longest time without a case on my iPhone 4. Dropped it a few times with no issues (I personally don’t care about a minor scratch here or there, it is a tool). I finally dropped it just right (or wrong, I guess) and the front glass shattered. I took it into the Apple store and replaced it. I begrudgingly bought an Apple bumper for it, as it didn’t really add much bulk to it. It did a good job protecting it.

Now that’s have the iPhone 5, I am again going caseless. Perhaps after I need to have it replaced I will rethink it, but I doubt it.

I will never understand why someone can take a device like the iPhone (especially the 5) and put it in a huge bulky case like an Otter Box. I’d much rather have to purchase a replacement periodically than deal with that huge thing.

I was ceaseless with my iPhone 5 and loved it. I’m very carefully with my stuff. Then I noticed little scratches along the edges where the black anodized color was showing silver underneath. I decided I had to get a case after getting scratches after only a couple of months.

I used to “protect” my iPhone with a clamshell hard case, but the case caused fine scratches to appear all over the chrome bezel. I’ve been case-less for more than a year now with absolutely no problem—no more scratches, no handling mishaps.

I agree. I don’t wear a watch or jewelry, but if I did, I wouldn’t cover it. I made a rule (for myself) that my iPhone goes in one hand with nothing else. My 4S is my third naked iPhone and I’ve had no problem since I made that rule. My iPad is naked, too. I would like a bumper to make it easier to grip, but the only one I’ve found, that covers just the edges, was only made for gen 1 and maybe 2.

With a case you’re protecting the resale value of it. If I upgrade my iphone every 2 years and it’s in near perfect condition then I can sell it easily for more then I pay for the new one.

A case makes the iphone one of the cheapest smart phones out there in the long run.

Most people that get on planes do not have a parachute. In fact the people that do use then generally intend to jump out of the plane. So a parachute is not designed for emergencies but instead to allow you to jump from a plane in mid air and survive.

Are you saying if you planned to drop your phone you would not get a case? I don’t use a phone case but I also do not purposefully drop my phone.
