Analyst: Apple’s iOS is ‘The New Windows’ – and it’s not meant as an insult

“UBS Securities’s hardware analyst Steve Milunovich this morning opines that Apple’s iOS software on its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is ‘the New Windows,’ referring to the Microsoft (MSFT) operating system that dominates personal computers,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“Milunovich, who has a Buy rating on Apple shares and a $780 price target, writes that Apple is ‘winning in personal computing,’ arguing that ‘Although PCs are under pressure, the notebook + tablet market is growing (not to mention smartphones),'” Ray reports. “‘Apple is gaining as the ratio of total notebooks to iPads plus MacBooks peaked at over 30x in 2006 and is now just 1.6x. Not only could iPad maintain half the tablet market, but MacBooks might steal a significant number of Windows PC users.'”

Ray reports, “Milunovich thinks the increasing diversity in tablets offered on the market plays to Apple’s advantage, because ‘user confusion favors Apple given its leading brand, relatively simple product line, and retail store support,’ he argues.” Milunovich also reported, “We went to the Microsoft Surface [pop-up] store in Times Square to investigate Windows RT. Although the store was crowded, we did not witness any transactions except for a return… When asked about the number of returns, we were told ‘a fair number.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Sounds familiar.

The more OSes in the marketplace, the more confusion. This benefits Apple as consumers will gravitate even more to the leader with the vibrant ecosystem offering the most apps, third-party accessories, and features such as AirPlay.MacDailyNews Take, June 29, 2011

The more fake iPads that are released, the more confusion in the marketplace, and the faster your average consumer flocks to iPad.MacDailyNews Take, May 23, 2011

The more confusion, false starts, and dead ends there are out there, the better it is for Apple. People want consistency, reliability, and the assurance that the company making their device/OS will be doing so for many, many years. Only Apple can really offer such things. Buyers do not want fragmentation, empty promises, and risk.MacDailyNews, September 17, 2010

As we have always said, even as many short-sightedly waved (and continue to wave) the white flag, the war is not over. And, yes, we shall prevail… No company is invincible. Not even Microsoft.MacDailyNews Take, January 10, 2005
