Analyst: Apple’s iOS is ‘The New Windows’ – and it’s not meant as an insult

“UBS Securities’s hardware analyst Steve Milunovich this morning opines that Apple’s iOS software on its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch is ‘the New Windows,’ referring to the Microsoft (MSFT) operating system that dominates personal computers,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“Milunovich, who has a Buy rating on Apple shares and a $780 price target, writes that Apple is ‘winning in personal computing,’ arguing that ‘Although PCs are under pressure, the notebook + tablet market is growing (not to mention smartphones),'” Ray reports. “‘Apple is gaining as the ratio of total notebooks to iPads plus MacBooks peaked at over 30x in 2006 and is now just 1.6x. Not only could iPad maintain half the tablet market, but MacBooks might steal a significant number of Windows PC users.'”

Ray reports, “Milunovich thinks the increasing diversity in tablets offered on the market plays to Apple’s advantage, because ‘user confusion favors Apple given its leading brand, relatively simple product line, and retail store support,’ he argues.” Milunovich also reported, “We went to the Microsoft Surface [pop-up] store in Times Square to investigate Windows RT. Although the store was crowded, we did not witness any transactions except for a return… When asked about the number of returns, we were told ‘a fair number.'”

MacDailyNews Take: Sounds familiar.

The more OSes in the marketplace, the more confusion. This benefits Apple as consumers will gravitate even more to the leader with the vibrant ecosystem offering the most apps, third-party accessories, and features such as AirPlay.MacDailyNews Take, June 29, 2011

The more fake iPads that are released, the more confusion in the marketplace, and the faster your average consumer flocks to iPad.MacDailyNews Take, May 23, 2011

The more confusion, false starts, and dead ends there are out there, the better it is for Apple. People want consistency, reliability, and the assurance that the company making their device/OS will be doing so for many, many years. Only Apple can really offer such things. Buyers do not want fragmentation, empty promises, and risk.MacDailyNews, September 17, 2010

As we have always said, even as many short-sightedly waved (and continue to wave) the white flag, the war is not over. And, yes, we shall prevail… No company is invincible. Not even Microsoft.MacDailyNews Take, January 10, 2005

    1. It was with regard to the market impact. Apple can only hope to have that level of impact.

Pre Win95 Microsoft’s OS’s had a 60-70% market share and a strong impact. A year or two post Win95’s introduction Microsoft’s market share went to 95+% (some analysts set it at greater than 98%) and a truly *commanding* impact on the industry — so much so that even Steve Jobs declared the war over and that Microsoft won.

While I disagree that iOS has had the impact of Win95 (developers and users are using Android and other mobile OS’s at much, much higher than a 2-5% rate) Apple is certainly leading the charge. Only the truly extreme Fandroids are saying otherwise.

If you don’t want the author to equate the market impact of Apple’s iOS to the market impact of Microsoft’s Win95, what comparison would you choose? Certainly not the Macintosh. Certainly not the Apple ][. The iPods might come closer, but they are in a totally different category (not computational devices).

      What would you pick? ENIAC?

      1. It is a insult to Apple at least under Steve Jobs, Apple was never brain dead like Microsoft, MS has never had no class (vision) from very beginning they just got away with it, now they can’t, the old dog has to learn a new trick a trick it has never learned before.

  1. Two months I coined a new phrase that is exactly what this guy discovered yesterday …. When it comes to corporate IT tablet purchases… “Nobody ever got fired for buying IOS Mobile Devices”….. How the world turns….

  2. I think he is wrong. Android is the new Windows. Same story line and same thing happening.

Gates got into Apple copied and put out Windows with hardware partners spreading Windows on junk to premium computers and getting the most marketshare.

Shmidt got into Apple and I’m sure got inside info on iPhone for its Android products along with Rubin having inside knowledge and created Android partnering with hardware partners putting Android on junk to premium products and today has over 70% of phone marketshare and next will be the tablets. Who knows what plans they have for PC’s. Chromebook seems to be a failure, but they are still working on it. If Apple would open up a little more I think they could have the marketshare, but as long as they have the image of being a walled garden they will continue to be a niche product.

    1. Android is the new Windows only in the context that in the 90s, 40% to 50% of all PCs worldwide were running on bootlegged copies of Windows 95 & 98.

That’s right, almost half of Windows’ marketshare was not paying Microsoft a penny.

Android has over 70%, your words, marketshare and well more than half of Android’s marketshare is not paying Google a penny. No Ads, no Apps, no nothing. Open source has bitten Google on the ass and there is no way Google can change things.

Android out of Google’s control should be counted as some other entity’s marketshare.

        1. They might have that market share but having a crappy phone that most people use to just make phone calls doesn’t really make it a smart phone. I would say that 90% or higher iPhone users actually use the features of their phone and less than 20% of Android use them. It only counts if you use them – ask the developers who get paid by Apple and they will tell you.

    2. The difference is: apple makes the majority of the profits in mobile devices, despite having less market share than Android. Also don’t forget that IOS is dominating tablet sales – a market that is still growing compared to the mobile phone market – by a wide margin, so apple is in good shape going forward.

  3. I would agree if one could get by using an iPad without having a PC/Mac.

I’d like to see this guys opinion if his PC or Mac with iTunes died like mine did, and he could no longer wipe / backup / restore or sync on another computer without f**cking up some thing or another on the ipad. Once you realize how tied to iTunes and PC you really are, you realize the supposed “PC free” feature of the iPad is a Load of Crap and a lie.

    1. I think we need to separate the function of iTunes as a master controller for syncing your iPad, iPhone & iPod with the duty of backing up your data.

The reason why your iPad is imprinted on to iTunes in your Mac is because it saves an exact replica of your iPad in your Mac as the primary backup. This enables your iPad to be restored to its previous working condition, including settings, wallpaper, and data associated with the individual apps you installed. This is not a trivial undertaking. The fact that it is automated is supposed to make your life easier in the event you experience catastrophic failure with your iPad or suffer a loss through theft. iTunes returns you to your original settings so that you’re up and running the moment the synchronisation process is complete.

What you’re complaining of is a symptom of a failure to backup your Mac which means that your iPad is orphaned in the event your Mac experiences a failure from which you are unable to restore from a backup. However, the contents stored in your iPad, in the form of music, etc. is still safe and can be transferred to a new Mac. Simply choose transfer my purchases to the new Mac and your purchases will be synced to your new Mac without wiping out the contents of your iPad.

  4. Android is the new Windows because it runs on practically any hardware especially the cheap crap much of the world needs. One thing that Android has over Windows to make it more dominant is that it’s free, free, free. I find it utterly amazing how Google can absorb the continual cost of Android development and get almost nothing back financially and yet Wall Street absolutely believes Google and Android have worked out some brilliant financial model which is total BS. Wall Street’s idea that Android is the best mobile OS in the world is beyond belief. There’s just too many variants around and the updates are slow getting to consumers. What’s so great about that?
