USA Today survey: 1 in 3 Windows PC users intend on switching to Apple Mac or iPad

“Most Windows users in the U.S. know about Windows 8 but few have immediate plans to upgrade to Microsoft’s newest operating system,” Byron Acohido reports for USA Today.

“What’s more, about one-third of Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP users who are ready to buy a new personal computer say they intend to switch to an Apple product,” Acohido reports. “Those are the findings of an unusually broad survey of Windows PC users conducted by antivirus company Avast and released exclusively to USA Today.”

Acohido reports, “On Oct. 25, the day before Windows 8 officially went on sale, Avast polled 1.6 million users of its PC anti-virus product, and got 350,000 responses, including 135,329 from U.S. Windows users. Some 65% of U.S. users replied from PCs running Windows 7, while 22% still used Windows XP and 8%, Windows Vista… Avast’s poll of U.S. Windows users found 16% planned to purchase a new computer. While 68% indicated they would get one of the new Windows 8 models, 30% planned to buy an Apple iPad touch tablet, and 12%, an Apple Macintosh computer.”

MacDailyNews Take: As we predicted quite some time ago:

Our initial impression is that Microsoft, in trying to cram everything into Windows 8 in an attempt to be all things to all devices, will end up with an OS that’s a jack of all trades and a master of none (which, after all, ought to be Microsoft’s company motto)… We simply do not see the world clamoring for the UI of an iPod also-ran now ported to an iPhone wannabe that nobody’s buying to be blown up onto a PC display.

From what we’ve seen so far, Windows 8 strikes us as an unsavory combination of Windows Weight plus Windows Wait.

Not to mention that probably no one on earth knows how much or what kinds of residual legacy spaghetti code roils underneath it all (shudder)… No matter what, if Microsoft’s going to ask Windows sufferers to “learn a whole new computer” (and that’s exactly how they’ll look at it, regardless of how Microsoft pitches it), millions will simply say, “Time to get a Mac to match my iPod, iPhone, and iPad!”

  1. Well, looks like that 9.6 quake showed up as the iPad. Now Microsoft will, shortly, begin to see that wall of Apple computer and iOS devices rolling past and over all their levies. Beleaguered Microsoft!

  2. But, but, but, Windows 8 is so good. It does everything a Mac and iPad and iPhone does and more. Plus it’s got tiles. How could loyal Windows users turn away from that?

In a few years we will talk about Windows the same way we talk about dBase, Word Star, and Lotus today. I can’t wait!

  3. This doesn’t surprise me. My Apple life started in 2009 with iPhone. Then iPad. I finally took the plunge with an iMac in July 2011. Quite honestly I can say I’ve never looked back. It’s very unlikely I’ll ever use Windows at home again. If only my workplace would follow suit (they are still stuck on XP !!!)

    1. Multiply your story by millions and you have the prescription that saved Apple; injecting millions of remorseful Windows users into the fold, using the lure of fine craftsmanship.

I’m so happy you’re happy 1960, you are the reason Apple’s value exploded in the last five-years.

iPhone piqued your interest and once you were happy with iPhone, you had to wonder if all of Apple’s other products were as well made, right? You slowly discovered you were right!

Now you know what we’ve all known for thirty-six years; Apple’s not so bad.

  4. Oh, basic math issues again.

The 16% are broken into 3 groups
    68% … buying new Windows 8 models
    30% … buying Apple iPads
12% … buying Apple Macintosh computers

    That is 110% NOT 100%

Keep in mind that these are the kind of people we use for research in our investments. Do you really thing they understand Apple’s financial report? There are much bigger numbers in those filings.

  5. In my office, I just got a brand new Lenovo laptop running windows 7, Even that it is like 5 generations ahead of the old laptop the new one was way too slow to do anything at all with windows 7 on it . I just downgrade it to windows XP and everything improved very much, that’s right, the best OS ever came out from Microsoft is the 11 years old XP and that is not even close to Mac OS Tiger.
I don’t care anymore if the morons in the IT department still stuck in windows, I have a Mac at home and that is like vacations for me every time I switch from my work PC to my home Mac.

    1. Skeptical at first, I now believe after much time, that Windows 7 is much better than XP. It boots fast. It’s stable. It has a better security model.

Oh, and it’s still light years behind Mac. But the notion that XP is better is just plain BS.

    1. No viruses, but watch out for a few trojans out there. I have not found any, but I here they are out there, somewhere. My friend just got his first mac, a mid 2007 iMac. He is making the adjustment with a little help from me.

  6. Windows 8 is clearly a fatal mistake from a company that had absolutely nothing going for it but their customers’ familiarity with their products. Asking them to learn a new user interface is a gold-plated invitation to abandon Windows altogether.

    1. Oh yeah, like there weren’t OS 9 hold outs who refused to adopt OS X and eventually went over to Windows, because at least Windows behaved more like OS 9 than OS X.

Once Microsoft admits it has been copying Apple’s look and feel from day one, it then obviates the need to steal design cues from Apple, because they’ll be busy designing their very own computer from scratch using Win 7’s kernel.

That could be fun for the employees on the Redmond campus.

  7. And as the marketshare implodes, the person who would have been the prime Windows 8 scapegoat has left Microsoft.

This all could have been solved by keeping the Start button, at least in Windows 8, and then wean it off in the next Windows 9. And also having some visual indicator at the corners of the screen of the location of the charms bar.

    1. When you think of the design of Win8 / Metro you really do have to marvel at the decisions made right at the initial conception stage:
….I know, lets use really big fuck-off flat tiles (lets not get carried away with any 3D effects lets keep them really simple) …in primary colours so that the kids will feel right at home. Do away with shadows or any kind of hint that something’s been selected. Lets keep them guessing.
Lets hide the fact that certain inspection screens are lurking at the edges if only the poor suckers could figure out to move the mouse far enough into the corners…Oh NO – I thought we had squashed the use of the term “Charms bar” – who let that escape into the wild? I’m gone shot ’em when I find out (steady there Mr Bulmer you’ll have another one of your ‘episodes’….

Lets limit the thing to just 2 apps max at a time and to make life even harder lets make them occupy 33% & 66% of the screen so that 1 app looks all kinda cute and squashed up and the other looks kinda lost…

Lets bury the old Win7 desktop in there as an “app” and we can make them juggle around between 2 incompatible interfaces.
And while we’re at it lets really screw them up by mousing horizontally at first and then have the cursor fuck off vertically whenever it enters a scroll region. Wow – potential for LOTS of confusion there – lets DO IT!!!!

Seriously, they got PAID?? HOW?? If it were that easy I should be a billionaire right now, why only the other day I managed to talk on the phone while doing up a shoelace….

  8. where the new mac mini ads?
where is the Mac OS Mt. Lion is better than win 8 Vista 2 ads? (Most PC people have NO CLUE that Mt. Lion is better than Windows)
    where the iMac ads?
Where the generic Mac ads? (remember the dozens of mac PC guy ads that stopped in 2009?).
Perhaps you should also remind folks such a thing as a Mac Pro exists! (the dudes at Best Buy etc have no clue… )

weird but they afford to run ads when they sold FEWER macs in the old days …
the dudes at Best Buy, Walmart etc are NOT going to tell dudes Macs and OSX are BETTER because they ALSO SELL PCs so its up to Apple to advertise!

Brush off the cobwebs off the Mac marketing dude, he has been sleeping long enough and put him to work…

Have all your eggs in one basket i.e iOs (iPhone alone 50% of apple’s profits) and one hiccup like supply chain, maps and other B.S and your stock goes from 700 to 500.

Yeah, yeah I know about ‘fiscal cliff’ etc BUT the stock started to tank before the elections etc when Apple had a earnings ‘miss’ (analyst target), the miss was only about 200 Million out of billions in revenue and profit, IF APPLE HAD SOLD A FEW MORE MACS THEY COULD EASILY HAVE MADE THE 200 M and maybe the stock will still be up there! (Imagine the thousands of headlines : instead of ‘apple misses earnings’ says “apple hits analsysts high targets!”

c’mon apple you got great stuff: Mt. Lion and Macs , don’t let Win 8 Vista 2 pass without cashing in! Macs have only 5% world marketshare, plenty of room to grow! Even in a ‘declining market’ Microsoft sold 300 million Win 7 licenses in a short time…

    SELL, ADVERTISE… !

(sorry for the rant which many have read before but I hope somebody at apple will pay attention.
Not saying do not focus on mobile but Apple ALREADY has great stuff like Mt. Lion… they should market!)
