“BlackBerry or iPhone? It’s been a battle for years, but Apple’s smartphone offering may be the healthier pick for anyone with allergies, according to new research from the U.S.,” Paul Irish reports for The Star.
“Nickel used in the production of the Canadian Research In Motion product has been found on the device’s buttons and keyboards, where it could cause an allergic reaction such as dry, itchy skin, says a study presented at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI),” Irish reports. “Approximately 8 to 9 per cent of North Americans react adversely to nickel and the College confirms cases of ‘cellphone dermatitis’ are being diagnosed.”
Irish reports, “Allergist Dr. Tania Mucci, speaking at the conference in Anaheim, CA, on Nov. 9, said one-third of the study’s BlackBerries tested positive for nickel while iPhone and Android devices came up clean.”

Nickel reaction is not a huge deal. I have it, and once I swap out the belt with the offending buckle, or in the old days, the watch with the nickel back, the localised rash quickly resolved.
The bigger issue is that beleaguered RIM is not in a position to withstand reports of too many of these even small issues.

Actually nickel allergies are a BIG deal. You may have a mild sensitivity but some people have a very severe response. I lived in an area using well water and had to put in an expensive reverse osmosis system as showers and even drinking tap water caused problems.

Don’t act all innocent. Apple comes from the US, but the US also spawned Google and Microsoft, not to mention Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.
Some Canadian coins have nickel content.
That explains a lot. Many Canadians are allergic to paying taxes.
Research has found that there is no nickel in . . . em . . . glass.
Perhaps not in the Gorilla Glass used in iPhones and such, but glass can contain a variety of elements and compounds. For instance, nickel is used as a green tint in glass.
Well … run iOs or Android on them. Problem solved.
