Demand for Apple’s new iPad mini is huge

“Apple announced Monday morning that it sold 3 million total iPads over the weekend, and ‘practically sold out’ of the iPad mini, which starts at $329. On Friday and over the weekend, customers reported stock depleted across the country on Twitter, telling CNBC that in many cases only 64-gigabyte black mini tablets were available,” Jon Fortt reports for CNBC.

“iPad minis with built-in cellular service still have yet to go on sale. Apple had said that model will ship in mid-November, and told CNBC there has been no change to that schedule — meaning those models should ship in 2-3 weeks,” Fortt reports. “Though Apple did not say how the 3 million iPad figure broke down — how many were 4th-generation iPads vs. minis — it seems clear the mini made up the clear majority of models sold. Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray estimates about 2.5 million sold were minis, blowing past his prediction of 1.5 million for the launch weekend.”

Fortt reports, “The strong opening sales can’t be good news for Apple rivals Amazon, Google, and Barnes & Noble, which are selling 7-inch tablets [vs. iPad mini’s much more expansive 7.9-inch display offering 35% more screen area than tiny screen tablets peddled by book sellers and search engines].”

    1. Agreed. I actually would like the next iPhone to have a bigger screen. The screen on my iPhone 5 is nice, but a bigger model would be killer. They should keep the 4 inch (for the ladies) but also have a 4.5 inch model on the market.

  1. Well, got mine Friday and I have to say, I’m impressed. Especially with the Wifi, it seems so much faster than the iPad 3’s. It is perfect for e-reading. I’m sure a lot of little kids are going to be extremely happy this Christmas.
