The Lumia on the market today is running WP7 and can’t be upgraded to WP8. This happened previously with Microsoft where Windows Mobile 6.x was dead ended along with their ‘Kin phones.

iOS on the other hand has a history of supporting older hardware that’s really quite stellar. For example the latest iOS, version 6, runs on the 3GS which came out 3 years and 4 months ago. Given the release cycle, it’s likely you’ll see at least 4 year support in iOS.

Having product on the shelves that won’t support an already announced OS coming in a month, isn’t a smart strategy for boosting (or maintaining sales).
