I hope this story is correct. A 7.85″ screen at a 4:3 aspect ratio would provide the new iPad with 40% more screen area than its rivals with ostensibly similar screen sizes, i.e. 7″ at 16:9 aspect ratio. The difference in screen area will be obvious.

How many failed 16:9 Android tablets out there must litter the landfills of the world before 4:3 is accepted as the golden ratio.

The UI elements for the iPad differ significantly from the iPhone for some apps. Take mail and calendar for example as two instances. Due to the larger iPad screen, the apps spread themselves out in landscape mode. You want to maintain the same UI elements scaled down for the iPad mini, not adopt the iPhone UI elements.

Therefore maintaining a 4:3 aspect ratio would allow developers to adjust their apps to iPad 2 resolution which still looks pretty good in my opinion.

Awesome. 16:9 sucks on tablets. I don’t even like it on phones; Apple should’ve made the iPhone both longer and wider to maintain its original 3:2 ratio.

I guess this would make sense and completely avoid any further fragmentation resulting from additional unique display resolutions.

The original iPad’s pixel density is 132ppi, while the non-retina iPhone’s is 163ppi. If you take the iPad’s 1024×768 screen and scale it down from 9.7 to 7.86 diagonal, you get 163 pip – same as original iPhone.

This seems the most plausible of anything I’ve seen so far. If you don’t have to file your fingertips to use the iPhone, neither will have to file your fingertips to use supposed iPad mini.
