More blood on Apple iPad’s touchscreen: HTC exits U.S. tablet market

“HTC has discontinued sales of tablets in the United States,” Mike Dano reports for FierceWireless. “However, a company executive said the Taiwanese handset maker could re-enter the space if it builds a tablet that could ‘make a splash.'”

“During the past two years HTC has sold three tablets in the United States: the Flyer; the WiMAX-capable Evo View 4G for Sprint Nextel; and the 10-inch, LTE-capable Jetstream through AT&T Mobility,” Dano reports. “‘It was a great learning experience for us, and they definitely met expectations,’ Gordon said of the tablets.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, they learned how to liquidate inventory and, boy, were those some low expectations!

Dano reports, “He acknowledged that Apple’s iPad continues to dominate the tablet market and he said that HTC would only consider returning to the tablet space if it developed a product that could make inroads against the iPad and other tablets… HTC isn’t the only company to pull back from tablets. For example, Hewlett-Packard discontinued sales of its TouchPad tablet and LG Electronics decided this summer to put its tablet development on hold to concentrate on smartphones.”

      1. Clever retort, GM, but if you go to the Apple web site you’ll find that they still maintain Newton support services, including manuals and knowledge base entries – 15 years after its cancelation by Steve Jobs.

So, good try… thanks for playing.

  1. HTC should be the first of many companies to give up on tablets. Good riddance. These Android tablet vendors are so stupid to pursue the tablet market. They’re not going to be profitable, so what’s the point. All Android tablets are basically clones of one another so there really isn’t that much to differentiate them from each other. These pundits who think that Android tablets are going to put Apple out of business are not very smart. Android tablets will gain market share if they’re willing to lose money on every tablet sold. How long will that last?

  2. “HTC would only consider returning to the tablet space if it developed a product that could make inroads against the iPad and other tablets”

    – Honest, and an acknowledgement that only hard work and INNOVATION (not IP theft) will produce a tablet worth bringing to market. Kudos to Gordon for this announcement.

  3. Never even heard of any of those HTC tablets. The only tablets I’ve ever heard of (other than glorified e-readers like Kindle and Nook) are iPad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and the now defunct HP Touchpad.

If you want to sell a tablet, HTC, you should probably make an effort to let people know it exists.

    1. If it MET expectations, then why do they no longer sell their tablets here? I’d assume that producing a tablet means that you EXPECT to continue selling the tablet and make it profitable.
