Apple extends complimentary iCloud storage for a full year to former MobileMe members

As a thank you to former MobileMe members who moved to iCloud, Apple has extended the complimentary storage upgrade they received until September 30, 2013. This extension applies to accounts moved to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st, 2012.

How do I know if the complimentary storage extension applies to me?
If you are a former MobileMe member and had access to more than 5GB of MobileMe storage when you moved your account to iCloud, then you received a complimentary iCloud storage upgrade automatically. That upgrade has now been extended, free of charge.

How much complimentary storage did I receive?
Your complimentary storage upgrade was based on the amount of MobileMe storage you were paying for when you moved to iCloud. You were granted either the 10GB, 20GB, or 50GB storage upgrade.

To check which storage upgrade you received:
• On an iOS device: Go to Settings > iCloud > Account.
• On a Mac: Go to System Preferences > iCloud, then click Manage followed by View Account.
• On a PC: Open the iCloud Control Panel for Windows, then click Manage followed by View Account.

How long does the complimentary storage extension last?
Apple will continue to provide you with this additional storage until September 30, 2013, or until you choose to upgrade your iCloud storage plan.

  1. Just got the email informing me of my extended iCloud storage upgrade that matches my 50gb former Mobile me storage option.. I tried to pay a few weeks back and was confused as to why the order would not complete… Now I know… Apple is a class act that knows how to treat their customers. Thanks Apple from a loyal customer and shareholder.!!

    5GB for another whole year … after killing iWeb hosting, Photo Galleries, and multiple Mac Syncing.
    Only a blind lemming would be impressed.

They were not obligated to give me anything … And it is any businesses right to discontinue unprofitable products … Do I am grateful to receive the upgrade which backs up all me products a no cost to me for another year…but then again some people are never happy.. I tend to avoid that type of customer in my business following the 80/20 rule…. 20 % of your customers are responsible for 80% of your issues…. It is therefore cost effective to avoid those 20%…. I am sure their will be those who say you should aim for 100 % satisfaction … Even if you do the rule stays true so if you are concerned with maximizing profitability you cannot spend the inordinate amount of time it takes to please them

      1. Oh yea a P.S…. Twenty some odd years ago Apple was one of the customers I passed on….they wanted too much for too little… My business went on to be #3 in California in our industry…. Just as customers can pick their products, businesses can pick their customers.

        1. Had his exact issue today, client complaining that the print job we’d done for them of 70,000 magazines was wrong (it wasn’t) and was demanding a 90% discount (not for the first time).

          After spending 20 minutes explaining to the client that the job was done to his spec, he “agreed” to pay 80% of the cost…

          I accepted this 80% payment and when the money arrived I took great pleasure in ringing the client and telling them that we will no longer accept any work from them as we do not need the hassle.

          Some people just don’t know when to stop…

  3. Nice of Apple. But I find iCloud to be of extremely limited value, so much so that I had decided to NOT pay extra for the cloud space. While I had found iDisk useful (and highly versatile) for file storage, I find iCloud useless (and irritating and of extremely limited versatility).

    I’ve moved almost entirely to DropBox (as a paid service).

    1. iCloud is hopefully the shell of something great to come. Could not agree more about how limited it is.

      Not having a built in web creation app on iOS for iPhone and iPad with a matching app on the Mac and hosted we space is a huge glaring hole.

      Apple… you didn’t have to do that, a month would have been MORE than enough. It was an error… no harm no foul.

  4. went from iTools to the present offering. i think extending this “gift” for one more year is insulting. it should be permanent considering how much we paid in prescription fees for the privilege. don’t get me wrong, i loved the service and took advantage of everything it had to offer. but making it free and taking away functionality after all the money i spent i feel deserves keeping the extra 5GB of space permanently.

    1. Yep, me too – went from iTools on OS9 all the way through to iCloud.

      I’m happy with what they’ve done – I was actually totally prepared for them to charge me for my 20GB at the end of last month.

      Aside from iDisk being gone, I find iCloud to be great, and much better than any of their precious offerings (MobileMe was just an unreliable clusterf@ck).

      I just looked at mine… not even 2500 songs, and I have a single playlist of less than 300 i actually listen too.

  5. well, google gives you 5GB free whatsoever. apple? there is no free service. sucks hell. mail service is broadly opened for free nowadays. apple still charges for that shit. that’s why I don’t use it anymore. apple only cares money. now, they got paid back by lawsuit.

    1. i don’t know what alternate dimension you’re living in where apple charges for mail and doesn’t offer 5GB free, but it’s obviously not the same universe i’m living in, because i have free email and 5GB free storage from Apple and have for over a year now.

    I’m a bit confused by the last part of this. After 09/30/13 does my extra 20GB end or not.

    1. Check back in a year. – Apple will exceed expectations by extending free storage another year. And then another year, and then another, adinfinitum until 2050. At which point, all data will be stored in the ‘hive-mind’, or iMind.

  7. If I figure out what I can do with my extra 20GB of iCloud storage, I’ll think about upgrading (and paying) to add the extra space after next year. So far, I’m not even using half of the free 5GB that everyone gets.

    I do pay for iTunes Match, and think IT is an extremely valuable service that I will keep using. However, iTunes Match does not take up any of that allocated iCloud storage.

    OR, I cynically imagine, until Apple figure out how to kill the bug that provides we former MobileMe users with continued free extra space. Kidding.

    What is factual is that Apple is having a terrible time communicating with its customers. They should have announced this situation well before September 30th when the 20+ GB of MobileMe cloud space was supposed to vaporize. It reminds me of the lousy job Apple are doing documenting their software over the past year. Want a great example? WTF is up with the AirPort Utility v5.x documentation? Why does Apple ignore the fact that it is blatantly and consistently incorrect? And so it goes…

    Communication is the fulcrum upon which all human interactions balance. Kind of DUH I’d say.

      Seems that Apple gave him something free, for no reason, but didn’t have the decency to give him sufficient prior warning. Evil Bastards! Santa, you’ve been warned!

      Can’t imagine what the Airport Utility instructions are for. About as useful as instructions for a spoon.

      But I got 20 GB of free space on iCloud, for at least a year, and I like it! 😀

    1. Yeah, and I don’t need the space, so it’s no good to me either. We need financial compensation to the equivalent value others get from this.

      When I was a kid, my teacher once bought in a tin of sweets for the class. For absolutely no reason other than she thought it would be nice. Some of the kids asked ‘is this all?’. They just got something for nothing but wanted to know why it wasn’t something better. Pretty much spoiled her day I think, she was quite shocked by the extraordinary attitude. The kids concerned would have been the least deserving too, disruptive and rude in her classes.

      Perhaps she, like Apple, should have provided a cash alternative for anyone who didn’t their gift?

      Ingratitude and entitlement run amok.

  9. I would say this is to allow Apple® to find a way to consolidate the accounts of those with multiple accounts as had been “rumored” they might be doing. They needed to keep the multiple accounts in place until they can find a way to allow people to combine them. (I hope.)
