Now now. Expecting reasoned reactions here is a bit optimistic.
People buy a Kindle for an entirely different reason – for simple book reading it’s perfect.
Making a smaller iPad will be as daft as making a smaller iPhone, it’s pointless.

Enderle’s track record is unblemished. Amazon and Barnes and Noble don’t own the content. They own stores that SELL the content. The publishing companies own the content, or the film studios, or the music labels. Amazon owns just about the same amount of content as Apple does, which is to say, virtually nil.

There is a market for a smaller iPad that is predominately a “content consumption” market, but not like the existing content consumption marketplace…. and it’s one where the current small tablets can’t work because the marketplace also requires devices with productive capabilities.

I just hope Apple goes all out with the “mini” not just a “cheaper” IPad. If people are looking for a 7″ IPad they will pay extra for the quality. I would think that Apple is not doing this to chase a price point. I’m looking for the IPad quality and specs, just in a smaller size.

Enderle makes some valid points, and he is not saying that a small iPad will be a fail for Apple – he is just pointing out that the market conditions will be different for this product, and he is correct – Amazon and Barnes & Noble are established in this market and they also own the content. Apple may well have several surprises in store for us with this new product which may change the ballpark, but we will have to wait and see…

Who knows? Doesn’t anyone check his credentials? How does he know anything about Apple when he’s never used one or set foot in their business? Why is his opinion about anything in general, and tech in particular, so desired by the MSM? All he ever did was work at ROLM / IBM as a lower tier marketing manager. ROLM built telephones and PBXs. Then he spent time at Dell advising them how to build a tablet. We all know how well that worked out. Then from time to time he’s been a contractor for MS. Who knows what he advised them on?

Really. Apple will have a hard time “breaking” into the 7-8″ tablet market? What’s their angle? – how about making money, a monstrous eco-system to back it up and giving consumers what they really want. Since when does Apple not BECOME the market they enter into anymore?
