Hands on with Apple’s iPhone 5 on EE’s new 4G LTE network in the UK

“I was lucky enough to get invited to a little get-together this week to test out EE’s — formerly Everything Everywhere, the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile — LTE 4G speeds on a selection of devices, including the iPhone 5,” James Richardson reports for iMore.

“As you will see from the video the data speeds are pretty impressive, both upload and download, and a real step in the right direction for the UK smartphone market,” Richardson reports. “Out of all the media that attended the event today I am told I managed to get the highest download speed which was just over 42mbps. Most UK households don’t even have home broadband that fast!”

MacDailyNews Take: The iPhone 5 speed is remarkable and addicting. Once you go iPhone 5, you can’t go back.

  1. F me!….
thats faster than my WiFi in my house…

I only get “4G” here. (word is early 2013 for LTE) Peaked once at 18Mbps/6Mbps. typically 6-9Mbps/3-4Mbps in my testing.

the day I get LTE I am going to be a happy guy.

  2. “… I managed to get the highest download speed which was just over 42mbps. Most UK households don’t even have home broadband that fast!”

At that speed, roughly 450 bytes per day, he’ll never have to go worry about going over his data caps! (Just struck me as funny that a tech writer confuses M for mega with m for milli.”)

  3. I happen to own both Verizon and AT&T 4G LTE Bases and live where both are in service- in fact the towers are both within sight and are probably a football field apart.

Here are the results with the same app on my iPad:
    (Sierra Wireless Hotspot)
    AT&T 7.17 Mbps Down 10.05 Up
    (Novatel Wireless Hotspot)
Verizon 22.95 Mbps Down 8.86 Up

iPhone 5 on same AT&T Service
    6.59 Mbps Down 7.92 Up

    Comcast Standard Service
3.34 Mbps Down 0.7 Mbps Up

  4. In a major market (Houston), I got 37.71 down and 15.97 up on AT&T whilst taxiing to the gate after landing.

In a smaller market further south, I got 41.30 down and 18.55 up.

Pretty amazing. I will 2nd the MDN take. It’s like an iPhone5 on LTE is how a mobile device was meant to be (as far as device and network speed).
