Mossberg reviews Apple’s iPhone 5: ‘The best smartphone on the market’

“I’ve been testing the new iPhone for nearly a week and I like it a lot and can recommend it, despite a few negatives, such as a new maps app that has one big plus, but other big minuses,” Walter S. Mossberg reports for The Wall Street Journal. “On balance, I still consider the iPhone the best smartphone on the market, especially with its staggering 700,000 third-party apps and a wealth of available content.”

“In increasing the iPhone’s screen size, Apple took a different approach than competitors. It kept the same side-to-side width, yet added height to grow the screen from its previous 3.5-inch size,” Mossberg reports. “I found the new iPhone screen much easier to hold and manipulate than its larger rivals and preferred it. In my view, Apple’s approach makes the phone far more comfortable to use, especially one-handed. It’s easier to carry in a pocket or purse and more natural-looking when held up to your face for a call.”

MacDailyNews Take: …than a piepan-sized POS Samsung Duplophone.

“The minute you pick the iPhone 5 up you notice it’s much lighter—20% lighter, in fact. It’s so much lighter that you wonder if it’s a demonstration mock-up, not the real thing,” Mossberg reports. “Yet unlike many competitors, this isn’t a plastic, insubstantial-feeling device. Although Apple claims it’s the world’s thinnest smartphone — 18% thinner than the prior model — the iPhone 5 retains Apple’s trademark, solid-feeling, metal construction, with an aluminum back this time, instead of a glass back. Like many Apple products, it’s gorgeous.”

Mossberg reports, “Apple has taken an already great product and made it better, overall. Consumers who prefer huge screens or certain marginal features have plenty of other choices, but the iPhone 5 is an excellent choice.”

    1. Just wait until the stupid Windows Phone and Microsoft Surface are officially launched. CNET and ZDNET will fall all over themselves declaring them as The Second Coming. They sold their souls to MonkeyBoy a long time ago.

      Mossberg gets it though.

      1. I do actually think that the Nokia Lumia is actually a very good phone. Microsoft could be onto a winner with it, though I suspect that it might be too late. It is technically ahead of the iPhone in some aspects but overall the iPhone 5 still is ahead.

Personally my next phone WILL be an iPhone 5, I am waiting before I buy.

  1. See Apple’s product is the best compare to lots of copy cats in the market. Copy cats save lots of money because they dont have spend money on research but still they cant produce good quality product. Instead they produce cheap junk rated phones and then advertise to compare the products.

    1. You’re right, knockoffs are cheap because their producers did not innovate, only copy. I admit myself buying imitated products to save money, especially clothing and sometimes handbags (so overpriced!).

But some things, you do not want the copy, if it means so much to your quality of life. Such as comfortable yet fashionable shoes, and just so, the Apple smartphone, both of which are with you all day long. The latter, perhaps even longer.

  2. Mossberg has no credibility. After all the issues being reported with the iPhone5 from the users who actually paid for the phone, you can’t help but wonder if Moosberg actually used the phone. Or he is so in love with Apple that he dismisses any negative comments.
I bet if the problem with the map software occurred with Windows, Moosberg would have said to wait buying the phone until the issue is fixed. But since this Apple, no such statement is made.
