This is nonsense: “Fail more than they work”? Please, this kind of hyperbole strains credulity and your credibility immediately.Do they sometimes not work? Yes, I had an email account at Apple not get mail for 6 hours last week, even as my other Apple email accounts and Messages worked just fine. Got a note of apology about it fropm APple, which is the only reason I was aware it had failed. Same has happened to me with Yahoo, Gmail and others. Gmail and other Google services never fail? OF COURSE they do. In none of their cases do I see them “fail more often than they work.” Please back up your hyperbole with real live data that shows Apple’s online services fail or are down more than 50% of the time.

I agree thre service needs to be reliable. And for me, it is, almost 100%; I cannot remember it ever going down, today, yesterday, last week, or last month. What I love most about Messages—and this is a significant value and differentiator as compared to SMS on a single device, and note that it is not iMessage any more—is its ability to be constatnt-state across multiple devices. This part isn’t perfect yet, but 95+% of the time, whether I open Mesdsages on my iMac, MBA, iPhone, or iPad, both sides of all my conversations are there. It isn’t 100% there yet, and it should be. But the prospect is more than promising enough to make it worthwhile. And 99+% of the time, it frankly just works as well as and better than SMS. If you’re having problems, I get the frustration, and why you wouldn’t share my sentiment.

If you’re thinking neandersmall, and only compare Messages to SMS on a phone, well then, hell no, it’s not worth it. But that’s not the value prop.

I have never experienced an issue with MobileMe, iCloud, or iMessage with one exception, when AT&T fails to provide me data services my iMessage stops working and it fails to SMS but SMS fails and this is an AT&T issue as I also cannot do anything data related even though I have full bars. If I wait a while my data may start working again.

the benefit in imessage is texting to ipads and macs. Also, sprint and verizon now offer free texting, but anyone on an older verizon plan, att, or t-mobile will want imessage.

I have had pretty good luck with it. Only noticed problems a couple of times. Nothing is foolproof. Siri and dictation however are a different story. Apple does need to get that working better. Problems occur too frequently. C’mon Apple, this is something I would expect from Microsoft. You have to do better. Fix it or drop it.

There is an old adage about one’s “reach being beyond one’s grasp.” As much as I love Apple, I see Apple trying to become the Swiss Army Knife of all things technological. In the process, instead of concentrating on a few things and doing them extremely well, Apple seems intent on attempting to do conquer the technological universe while producing a mixed bag from the excellent to the awful. My MacAir 2012 is a great example of a product that is simply stunning and a engineering marvel, Unfortunately, my SuperDrive is an example of a product that borders on the awful, with its outdated and flimsy, breakable USB 2.0 connecting wire. And what of iWork? When first released, it was on the path to becoming a fantastic product, but Apple has let it languish while producing multiple updates to iLife, with some modules that many people never use such as GarageBand. Again, I love Apple but if it continues to concentrate its efforts on only a few products, those that are awful will eventually bring Apple to its knees: iCloud and iMessages, for example, will only test the patience of so many for so long before the backlash will turn around and bit Apple in the rear (its bottom line and, more importantly, its reputation).

Not only that, but Apple needs to offer iMessage on every possible platform, rather than allowing the iChat/iMessage/FaceTime fragmentation to continue.

After all, there needs to be a critical mass of correspondents.

Apple, don’t miss the iMessage (and FaceTime) window of opportunity.

I have never had any issues with the service and I use it for domestic use only. I do however, use the Whatsapp messaging for my friends and family who live abroad and am pleased with both services. I refuse to get ripped off any more than I have to by AT&T and will never pay to use
regular text messaging here.

My big issue with iMessage is if I delete a text on my phone it doesn;t always delete on my iPad or Desktop this is a recipe for disaster. I delete the text because I don;t want anyone else to spy and see it but there it is on two of my devices. Anyone know a solution besides don;t use it anymore? because it’s great idea in theory but if doesn’t work in practice i’ll have to quit it. It’s embarrassing for Apple. They need to fix it ASAP.

My feeling is that the problem has to do with bad cell phone coverage or bad internet reliablility . In my area ATT’s internet is horrendous. I can have two-three bars and 4G and it will take 10-15 minutes to go to google.com. Unless I have full bars I can’t get google.com to load fast.

Yes, Apple should make the notifications of delivery receipts accurate, but I have a feeling the underlaying problem is the cellular companies spotty internet.

Never had an issue with iMessage. Had a duplicated contacts issue with MobileMe in the early days, and then when it was finally rock solid, reliable, and was something I used every day they replaced it with a craptastic iCloud that sync’d fewer computers, fewer items, and brought back the f—ing duplicated contacts issue.

I can honestly say that there are maybe 10 close friends and family that I iMessage daily and it has gone down a few times. Enough to call Apple or even be bothered? No, not at all. Reality is, Everything fails. I can recall yahoo instant messenger going down everyday!! I’m sure every service hasl or will suffer an outtage. iMessage is twice the speed of text plus it allows me to send more data, i.e., I can send an 1080P video from iMessage but text will compress it beyond visibiltiy! I say, long live iMessage!! Thanks for the service.

No, that’s not true. For iMessage to work both phones have to have iMessage turned on. Just turn your’s off and problem solved.

Yeah I’m here in the UK and I’ve never had any problems. Sometimes it take 30 seconds to realise that I have a 3G or wifi after no service and wants to send a text message but other than that it works well. I understand now that most people have unlimited text messages now but what I really like about it is free mms. You don’t have to pay to send a video, picture, location or contact etc.

The syncing of messages between multiple devices DOES work, at least, it has been for me since I started using it fully at the beginning of the year. I see and hear messages sent and received on my phone, Mac and iPad when the computer is on and all are in the same room, and all messages show on all three screens. Everything was working perfectly yesterday, so I see no issues now, or in the past. It would be interesting to see which territories these outages occur in.

Also, my friend had replied to a message of mine but I never received it.

99% of the time means that out of 365 days in a year, iMessage would be down enough times to equal 3.65 days.

That is NOT acceptable for a company with Apple’s resources, and while technically it’s not a paid service, we *did* pay extra for the ecosystem which includes it.
