You are a bit late to this party. This was posted in September.

In any case, the only thing that is the same between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 is the appearance of a metal band around the outside. I say "appearance" because the sides and back are now a single piece. It would be like say your new Dell mini-tower isn't new because they didn't pack all the new innards in a triangular case.

You key in on the one exterior design cue meant to connect one model to the next as an iPhone and then claim EVERYTHING is the same and then in the next breath say it is obnoxiously longer?

Additionally, the "obscene" price you refer to is the same as the flagship phones from the other OEMs at their own introductions.

And the iPad Mini's size doesn't have to be accommodated for because it has the same number of pixels as the iPad 2 for which there are large numbers of apps already written and available that are optimized for the larger surface area of a true tablet.

Somebody shoot me; you fan boys will drool over anything white (chrome nowadays) with an Apple logo on it. It's faster, thinner, lighter, and yep - more of the same. It doesn't take much to make a phone faster - all they do is throw in the latest CPU and bam, it's new. It's as if I put a new hard drive in my computer and said it was a brand new PC. The iPhone 5 is a updated iPhone 4, and that's all that it is. I remember when iPhone 4 first came out, and it was a drastic change - the phone looked sleeker, with a better build quality, and reflected the simple, gorgeous look that Apple was known for. Even I wanted it; Apple was interesting, its products compelling to me enough to really want to shell out the obscene amount of cash for one of their products. Now they've made their now-flagship device gunmetal black, with an obnoxious length. Apple used to innovate, lead the industry, and now it seems like all they're doing is "catching up". Yes, I want practical, but isn't your slogan (or was) "Think different"?

By the way, the iPad Mini sucks as well. There's ANOTHER screen size you'll have to accommodate for. In before "cool story bro/tl;dr/related".

Its hardly boring, yet I am disappointed that they didn't wow us as they normally do. I mean the phone was leaked all over the net for months and most expected it was a trick, a marketing ploy and slight of hand.

Honestly, this was one even that could have been phoned in given the main event in the ring was already outed. The new iPod Touches and iPod Nano's are sweet, although I was bummed they went bigger with touch again on the Nano so the watch idea is dead.

@ NHL: actually, no, bicycles are not using the same old boring circular wheel design. wheels on cutting-edge bicycles are nothing like the hand-built "black art" hoops of yore. Modern wheels are carbon fiber wunder-material works of art that can be spotted a mile away.

For example: https://madfiber.com

and do you know what? They sell partially because they LOOK like they mean business, not just because they are "new".

Apple offers colors in the iPod lines. Apple offers different physical detail in the different iPod lines. Apple could have done a hell of a lot more with the iPhone 5. Apple abandoned its legacy iPhone accessories but tried as hard as they could to make the IPhone 5 look as close as possible in physical form to the iPhone 4. Missed opportunity for sure.

the iphone 5 is a great phone, a great evolutionary step, it has many features that others don't have and it will sell like hotcakes.

still, i am missing some useful features that others already have and would make some welcome additions no matter how hard apple tries to talk them down:
- a screen that would be operable with gloves and fingernails too (like the lumnia does)
- sharing between ios devices (itunes in the cloud and photostream are complicated substitutes for something very simple: beam my stuff from one of my devices to the other)
- wireless charging (doesn't make much sense when you're traveling but would be very useful at home. imagine you come home, lay your device on the charger and it also synchronises with your computer via wifi at the same time, no cables needed - sounds very convenient to me)

If you're saying that they lacked on new features and major design leaps, think about how huge a leap the iPhone 4 was but was it not just the same advances from the 3GS as the 5 is to the 4s? It had a body change (yeah sure the 5's is a bit more subtle but still extremely significant considering it's change to the screen size) , it had a new camera in the front and back (so does the 5), it had a faster processesor (so does the 5), other than that it was just faster and better which is again the same with the iPhone five. The rest of it was software, just like the iPhone 5. I would say this is just as revolutionary as the iPhone 4 if not more.

I always like apple keyboard (the white plastic keyboard) and am still using them even for my newer minis or imacs because somehow I feel my fingertips experience better physical contact compared to apple's metal keyboard. I can hit those keys with confidence during my recording session especially when I have to hit or hold several keys at once... Sure the metal keyboard looks better since it matches the imac, mini and macbook metal design.

Now iPhone 5 has larger screen.. when looking at it, I have the same feeling like the first time I saw the metal keyboard. I think I would stick to my 4s since I'm pretty much comfortable with the design and how it fits in my pocket/jeans.

I'm sure iPhone 5 is a fine product and better than the previous models and much better than the droids and winphones. But then again, just like the white plastic keyboard, I need a product that I will feel comfortable, not just when using it, but also when I have to carry it along in my pocket.

Maybe, I would just wait for iPad mini if I need a device bigger than my phone but smaller than my iPad :)

@ Gordon: I don't give a care what phone someone else is using. But as you know, fashion trends move goods. Apple already got mixed press on having to resort to a patent protection to keep the copycats at bay -- and now we see a product that doesn't advertise itself as the newest thing. It looks like a small evolutionary step, which represents a missed opportunity. Especially considering that the iPhone 5 no longer works directly with any legacy iPhone accessories. As i stated earlier, not a deal breaker. US buyers will trade up when their contracts are due. International buyers will trade up when they need to and can justify the expense.

Maybe you're not smart enough to realise it, but my comment has nothing to do with the size of the iPhone screen. I for one am happy with it, In fact, I actually had hoped for a little bit larger one. Maybe 4.25 inches or so (I know, 4.25 is stupid, until the iPhone 7 which will be 4.25 and then it will magically be the "right" size)

Anyway, my comment was in reference to the shear two-facedness and hypocrisy. For years, MDN and every other ditto head, me too shill has said that 3.5 is the perfect screen size and that anything larger was stupid and not designed for the human hand. I have been ridiculed and soundly put in my place over the years for wanting a larger screen. It's just nice to know that Steve Jobs actually agreed with me, and not you bozos, since he actively worked on this phone before his death. Praise be upon him.

And how did you know that I have an espresso machine at home? And what does me enjoying coffee have to do with the size of the iPhone screen?

Well, I am very impressed with the new 5! Yes, it retains the original form factor, but, that's good!
My iPhone 4 has done sterling service and it's contract is up for re-newel. I will place the 5 order tomorrow.....waiting period?? I am in Australia and can order through the Apple Store in Sydney, or my phone co Telstra.
My wife and I share 7 Apple devices, as well as Apple TV....we love them all and use them all!
The new OS6 will be the icing on the cake for me.
I started a Mac club, approved by Apple, some years ago and was the Foundation President.
We have lots of free manuals for download.
See Bellarine Macintosh User Group (BMUG)
Let's enjoy the phone which Johnny Ives developed, as part of a team.
Hopefully Apple will continue to pursue Andriod phone and tablet makers that have stolen Apple's technology!
Regards from Australia.

My comment was more to the shear two-facedness and hypocrisy. Had Apple introduced a 5 inch screen, it would some how have been the "right" size. Even after years of posting non stop how stupid anything over 3.5 inch is, and how it just isn't designed for the human hand.

@mac daily news,

The screen is the right size? Really? Because I thought 3.5 inch was the right size. No, I thought 3.5 inch was the perfect size. In fact, I thought it was the only size that could be held and used one handed due to the limitations of human anatomy...does that mean that the new 4 inch screen is inferior? Has Apple now gone backward in Steve's absence?

Just go and purchase a Powermat case for it - and then you'll have wireless charging. I know someone who has this on their iPhone 4S, and it is pretty cool if you want that. He has a Powermat at work on the desk and one at home. He just sits his iPhone on it when he's at his desk and it is charging.

Me? I just plug mine up. ;)

Do you actually care if someone knows that you have the latest iPhone from 3 meters away (or at all for that matter)?

Hell, in some of the places I've been, you'd probably be better off if people DIDN'T know you had the latest iPhone. ;)
