HP blatantly copies Apple’s iMac, Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad designs

“HP announced a new all-in-one touchscreen PC called the Spectre One today that’s designed to run Windows 8,” Steve Kovach reports for The Business Insider.

“HP’s all-in-one design is almost a complete ripoff of Apple’s iMac,” Kovach reports.

Kovach reports, “Even the wireless trackpad and keyboard look like the one you can get with the iMac.”

I just say the design for the desktop is kind of nice …
Especially the thinness of the monitor …

  … iMac looks good, but worries me. True, ours has never tipped over. And there’s no proof a wider “foot” would prevent tipping more effectively. But …
  And I like the USB ports there … visible from the front. Don’t know HOW often I’ve had to drag the whole ensemble around so I could re-arrange the wires.
  Windows, eh? That’s a deal-breaker.

    Re Tipping: my iMac has withstood over 11,000 earthquakes in the last 2 years here in Christchurch, New Zealand (starting with a 7.1) and has hasn’t fallen over once – evidence of good design I would think!

    You’re serious? Steve Jobs did a really short summer internship there when he was *12* That would have been 1967. In technology timeframes, there’s nothing he could have borrowed from back then that would influence product design today.

      Woz worked for HP just before co-founding Apple. He presented the Apple 1 design to the HP management and their answer was “Your machine does not look like something HP would build”. See the irony?

      What Pat doesn’t know is that the current iMac stand was originally developed at NEXT by Steve & his team of engineers. Steve was really proud of that thing, even though they didn’t have much success with the computer that went on it.

I disagree that these are similar enough, except for the touch pad. Love Apple but don’t see the issue for these. Notice the ports in the base, the black bezel with no silver at the bottom and the differences in the curvatures of the stand? No issues to see here, move along.

  The basic computer/display is different enough, but the slab keyboard with round rear support is pure Apple. HP used an oval instead of a perfect circle, but come on… The touchpad is the same.

Definitely inspiration here. However I bet after a while the silver paint will rub off the white or grey plastic underneath and start to look horrible.

I have a Microsoft Mouse, designed for Mac, that is just annoying me to no end, not because of the workmanship or functionality, but because the plastics aren’t holding up. It’s like it’s decomposing in my hand. It won’t cleanup and just looks nasty.

With one Apple tack-pad, I bet it will last a lifetime, unless they come out with something else with new features.

The design I’ve been enjoying for years now . . . and am still enjoying. This stuff used to shock me, then anger me. Now I just expect this sort of behavior.

Someone needs to launch a website that is nothing but pictures of Apple products, the date of release, and then pics of the copycat products and their dates of release. That would be a lot of fun.
