Piper Jaffray’s Munster: Apple could sell up to 10 million iPhone 5 units first week alone

“With customers holding off purchases in anticipation of Apple’s next iPhone, an expected September launch is forecast to provide a significant boost for the company’s current quarter, with sales reaching as high as 10 million in just one week,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“Following the news that invitations for an event next Wednesday had been sent out by Apple, analyst Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray issued a note to investors in which he said a September launch window could have iPhone sales for the current quarter exceed Wall Street expectations,” Hughes reports. “Market watchers generally expect that Apple will report sales of between 22 million and 23 million iPhones in the September quarter. But a launch of the next iPhone this month could push total sales as high as 28 million, Munster said.”

Hughes reports, “Munster believes Apple could sell a total of between 6 million and 10 million new iPhones in the final week of September, barring potential supply issues.”

MacDailyNews Take: Every iPhone model released has set the all-time smartphone sales record. We expect iPhone 5 to do the same.

  1. Hey Gene, if we are trying to inflate Apple sales, lets go for 30 or 40 million. That way when they only beat their own numbers, You can write a hit piece about how Apple may be dying so people (other than those paying you) will sell and drive Apple down.

Hey, wait a min. Yea, drive the price down so I can get another share or two. Yea, thats the ticket. LOL

  2. This will make estimating the earnings for this quarter really difficult. Assuming a Sept 21 purchase/available date that only gives two days in this quarter. Fiscal quarters for Apple end on the fourth Saturday of the month. That would be two days of online and store sales. Plus, I believe, whatever is in the channel (delivered and received by) carriers ATT, Verizon, Sprint, (plus Canada?) Tough to estimate. An even greater impact on this quarter would be if availability starts on Sept. 14 (possible but inconsistent with the past). I believe Apple is timing the release somewhat to have an impact on this quarter’s earnings. I am sure they did not like last quarter’s second ever “miss of exceeding analysts predictions.” Slip the announcement and available dates one week and everything goes into the holiday quarter.

    1. Apple will create a tsunami. They will crush any expectations. And given only two days to complete the quarter… in Apple glory.

This will send a SHOCK and AWE message to

  3. For those who own a 4s, what incentive — if any — does one have to buy the 5? Will the 5 really have “the killer feature”? I just don’t see it yet. I have the 4, so I’m definitely getting the 5. But I’m wondering if we haven’t hit the ceiling for cool new features, other than speed. However…

What I think could be a very exciting announcement next week would be a fully-realized iPod Nano as a wrist device. The day that Apple optimizes it as a watch and wireless music device will be a VERY big day indeed. I’ll take my comments off the air.
