New ebook reveals Obama met with Apple’s Scott Forstall, ‘Steve Jobs’ biographer Isaacson to discuss ‘civility and political discourse’

“President Barack Obama’s campaign team, celebrated four years ago for its exceptional cohesion and eyes-on-the-prize strategic focus, has been shadowed this time by a succession of political disagreements and personal rivalries that haunted the effort at the outset,” Glenn Thrush reports for Politico. “Second-guessing about personnel, strategy and tactics has been a dominant theme of the reelection effort, according to numerous current and former Obama advisers who were interviewed for Obama’s Last Stand, an e-book out Monday published in a collaboration between POLITICO and Random House.”

“The e-book, produced as part of a two-month reporting project that included interviews with two dozen current and former members of Obama’s team, illuminates how the mood and character of the 2012 reelection effort is flowing from the top — with Obama’s own personality and values shaping his campaign just as powerfully as he did four years ago,” Thrush reports.

Thrush reports, “To give Obama a break from the relentless negativity of the campaign, friend and senior adviser Valerie Jarrett quietly set up a salon/dinner for Obama over the summer — which lasted more than two hours, a huge block of presidential time. On hand were Jarrett’s friend and Steve Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson, Facebook billionaire and new New Republic Publisher Chris Hughes, and Apple executive Scott Forstall, who led the team that developed the iPhone. One of the topics? Civility and political discourse.”

    1. The enthusiasm gap will kill Obama’s chances. Anymore missteps by him revealing his true big government, socialist- leanings or by Biden revealing the true depths of his stupidity will increase the margin of the Romney landslide. When looking at polls, you need to look at Likely Voters (Rasmussen Reports, for example) , not Registered Voters. LV polls are the only ones that matter.

Take heart, progs: Obama Leads Big — Among Those Least Likely to Vote

        1. Mitt Romney will beat Barack Obama and win the 2012 U.S. Presidential election.

          iCal me.

In Likely Voter polls, Romney already leads and the swing vote idiots do not pay attention until after Labor Day, if they ever pay attention.

No U.S. President has ever been re-elected with the unemployment numbers Obama has. Only one Democrat president has been even been re-elected in the last 60 years.

Mitt Romney will beat Barack Obama and win the 2012 U.S. Presidential election.

I’ve bookmarked this article and will be back here on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, day two of a week-long celebration at my lake house, to say “I told ya so.”

        2. “Mitt Romney will beat Barack Obama and win the 2012 U.S. Presidential election.

          iCal me.”

          Only if they steal it.

      1. The morning after the election ought to be a hoot when the ConservaTards start whining about 4 more years of Obamanation.

        It’s really simple:
If everybody who is entitled to vote gets to vote and the votes are honestly totaled the Rethugnicans lose. That’s why the Rethugs are trying by every means imaginable to disenfranchise people of color, college students who live out of state and others guilty of voting while not being Rethugnican.

There will be no magic underwear worn in the White House next January. Willard RawMoney will have to retire to his house with the car elevator.

      2. I am not against conservatism, in general. As I have stated before, I am more conservative in some aspects of my life and more liberal in others. In other words, a real person who recognizes that valid positions exist between the extremes. I am unwilling to label myself just so that I can join a group of people that enjoy patting each other on the back while reaffirming their shared viewpoints on everything.

Obama faced a very difficult situation coming into office and has not lived up to all of his promises. I would certainly be willing to cast my vote for a competing candidate that offered more promise. But, somehow, the GOP keeps bringing duds to the table, and the Democrats are no longer bringing worse duds like they did against Bush. I suspect that many voters might consider Romney/Ryan a significant improvement over the McCain/Palin ticket of 2008. But is it good enough? And then I consider all of the mean-spirited, nasty, labeling and sound bites and disinformation from the right and it makes me want to vote for anyone other than the GOP ticket. If Romney/Ryan lose, and I think it likely, then that may be the thing that lost it for them. Anytime someone tells me that I either believe everything that I am fed or I am , then I inherently distrust that source. The GOP has become far too much like a religion, and I don’t vote on faith.

        1. The text at the end should have read:

Anytime someone tells me that I either believe everything that I am fed or I am (insert insult here) , then I inherently distrust that source. The GOP has become far too much like a religion, and I don’t vote on faith.

  1. Socialist. You’d be amazed that he ever got elected unless you lived through the media malpractice. Thanks to the mainstream media for covering for this anti-American idiot in 2008. No hiding this, though:

    1. Wow. I’d heard about this here in Canada but never saw it. How can you take this out of context? Socialism defined. This would seem to be absolutely contrarian to the American philosophy of encouraging hard work and applauding the success that comes from creativity. I can’t believe he was stupid enough to come out and say that.

      1. This is totally taken out of context, and tellingly, Romney said almost the exact same thing, on video, a week later. Obama used poor phrasing, that’s all. He didn’t mean you (the business owner) didn’t build your business, he meant you didn’t build the roads and bridges and infrastructure that enable customers to come to your business or allow you to deliver your goods and services. Romney said the exact same thing even after the Obama firestorm on this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov1v9F8UN_0 at 34:30

      2. You have to hear a clip that includes the previous sentence, in which the infrastructure referenced by “that” is included. This clip is a complete lie when taken out of context.

  2. Obama’s own personality and values shape his campaign just as powerfully as he did four years ago:

The Obama campaign accuses Romney of giving someone cancer, then lies about doing it.

Scumbag. Unfit to be President of the United States of America.

  3. Glad to see MDN hasn’t lost their knack for trolling all the mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging neocons. Fortunately we’ve got less than three months before Obama wins reelection and they all crawl back to their sad little man caves.

    1. @Crispin,
Please keep up your pro-Obama commentary. Insults and name-calling are sure to persuade undecideds & independents of the wisdom of re-electing our illustrious President. Whatever you do, don’t stop.
      Many thanks!!!
      XOXOXO

      1. If you honestly believe Crispin’s or other similar comments… on this site… are going to discourage any thinking person from seeing both sides of issues, i think you are mistaken. I go to many tech sites and this one entices and attracts anti Obama comments in the harshest and crudest terms, the level of discussion is like a cesspool. Just read the comments and ask is this someone I want to spend time with. If you agree with their position, you may not care. I have a lot of close friends, including a girl friend, who I disagree with strongly however we are able to communicate using facts, not ideology.

      2. Anonymous Karen, since you are apparently a Romney supporter, you might want to talk to X, F10T12, and the rest of them up at the top of this forum. They have been giving the GOP a bad name around here for a long, long time. In fact, if I were undecided, I would vote for Obama just to spite F10T12.

    2. Gallup, August 20, 2012: Swing-State Voters Say They Are No Better Off Than in 2008

In swing states, 40% say they are better off and 56% say they are not better off. That includes 50% of independent voters, in addition to 36% of Democrats and 84% of Republicans saying they are not better off.

(Aug. 6-13, sample of 970 registered voters in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.)

The results are similar for all U.S. registered voters, among whom 42% say they are better off and 55% say they are not.

Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan famously asked Americans, in a 1980 presidential debate, if they were better off than four years ago. Shortly thereafter, he decisively defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter in the presidential election.

  4. This is probably MDN’s new all-time high for political click-baiting.

I wend to that article in Politico, tried to read the whole thing, looking carefully for more on that meeting with Forstall, only to find the only mention of him in the last sentence of the article, which MDN quoted verbatim. In other words, there is a 10-page article on Obama’s election campaign, with one single sentence, at the very end, mentioning Forstall (in passing).

As Bubbles above said, incredibly tenuous…

    1. I don’t think it’s so much click baiting as it is entertainment watching us go at one another for MDN. Like tossing a raw turkey into a room full of starving baboons.

Nothing surprising in the article. The type of person Obama is has been well documented.

The President is a man who seems to have the morality of a cat, the character of a mosquito, and the professionalism of a low level office political sycophant. He was elected on little more than one speech, and the exhaustion of a nation both tired of relentlessly and zealously attacking, or wearily defending his predecessor. He is a man that I regard as possibly the worst American President the country has seen in my lifetime.. He is not stupid. He is however deologically antithetical to the very core of Americanism. It would do us well to be rid of him.

It’s not a Democrat vs. Republican thing, it’s about this man. I can name Democraps I’d prefer over most Revolticans.

It’s Obama. To say that he is not qualified is a massive understatement.

In truth, he is not worthy.

      1. Much of what you say is true- at least in part. The problem is that Willard “Mitt” RawMoney is such a weasel that even Obamanation looks good by comparison.

      2. I think we elected juvenile swagger and a world view predicated upon a passionate hatred of what the American idea, the so called “experiment” is all about. We needed honor, strength of character, and a world view based upon a passionate understanding of who we are as individuals as well as a nation. We got lip service, class warfare, promises to every special interest group out there. We got more division. We needed to be brought together, reminded of what we’ve done together, and challenged to accomplish more. We needed someone to ask us once more, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Instead we got, “Just tell me what you need, and I’ll have the government do it for you.”

He is not one of us.

        1. Riggght… If you think that the division originated with the Obama administration and is solely his responsibility, then you are even more misguided than I imagined. Time to move on from this useless thread.

        2. @Thelonious: You said “I think we elected juvenile swagger and a world view predicated upon a passionate hatred of what the American idea, the so called “experiment” is all about” Are you truly and honestly saying that you think Obama has a “passionate hatred of what the American idea . . . is all about”??? If that were true, why would Obama ever want to become President? Or Senator? Or even stay in the US when he could – according to many republicans – go live in Kenya or the UK? Or simply live an island life in Hawaii? Your statement makes no sense whatsoever to any rational thinking person. And if you don’t really believe it, then you are simply dishonest. As for “We got more division” the evidence is overwhelming that while Dems are not totally innocent, by far the major protagonists of the recent destructive division are Republicans. Read the book I mention (co-authored by a life long and old school Republican and a similar Democrat, both long time Washington insiders and congressional scholars) for chapter after chapter of evidence.

  5. Read the book “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks” for true bi-partisan analysis – and agreement – on which side is mainly responsible for the breakdown in the American political civility, and the reason why the American political system does not work anymore. Spoiler alert – it isn’t the Dems.
A ten second review of the comments on this site confirms the book’s findings – calling the President of the United States such names such as “scumbag,” “asshat moron” and “anti American idiot” have no place in an educated or civilized discussion.

    1. Oh, please! The left wing has used far harsher language. Does the phrase “BusHitler” ring a bell? Heck, I’ve heard liberal late night comics use rather mean spirited language toward conservatives.

      1. Oooohh, late night comics! Well, I guess that justifies everything that you want to believe. You really just destroyed any iota of credibility in your position, Raymond in DC.

How just how do the “far harsher” comments from late night comedy/entertainment shows equate to similar comments from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh? Fox News proclaims not only to be “news,” but to Fair and Balanced. Rush says, “just trust me.” That’s right, the latter two are not late night comedy/parody, they are “news” outlets proclaiming to be valid sources of information. It is enough to make a person puke with disgust.

    2. Thank you.

I don’t take sides in politics but must say that this president cares about America as a whole and is not focused on one niche group but is rather focused on the core of America. While I don’t agree with all his decisions, I am not stupid enough to take stake with a political party.

For instance, I feel the republicans have taken this country hostage and have worked hard to be anti-Obama. The dems, I don’t know. Perhaps they can do more. I thought former president Bush was an awful president but he deserved the respect of president as much as this one does.

The country voted and voted strongly for Obama. I, and others see congress as a huge failure. America needs people to work together and not become simple lemmings to political factions.

        1. Typical. The right wing’s only response when faced with a factual and logical argument is to call the person names. And this is in relation to an article about political civility!! Sad to say the irony seems to escape most republicans on this board.
MEES is quite right. Obama has been hamstrung for the last two years by Republicans who were determined to stop every move he made – even going to the previously unheard of lengths of voting against their own proposals so that it wouldn’t make Obama look good. And the all out, number one treasonous statement in 2010 from McConnell that “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.” Not improve the economy or lower unemployment. Not work out a health care system that everyone can afford to participate in. But destroy Obama’s reelection chances. Republicans are apparently happy to sacrifice hard working Americans for their own political agenda.

    3. I take it you missed the vitriol of the previous administration, where the President was often compared to Hitler, Satan, and burned in effigy?

I agree that the we should try an curtail the lowbrow vitriol, but this is the Internet. People will express themselves the best way they can.

  6. Barrack Obama was out jogging one morning along the parkway when he tripped, fell over the bridge railing and landed in the creek below. Before the Secret Service guys could get to him, 3 kids who were fishing pulled him out of the water. He was so grateful he offered the kids whatever they wanted. The first kid said, ‘I want to go to Disney World & Barrack said, ‘No problem, I’ll take you there on Air Force One.’ The second kid said, ‘I want a new pair of Nike Air Jordan shoes. Barrack said, ‘I’ll get them for you and even have Michael Jordan sign them.’ The third kid said, ‘ I want a motorized wheelchair with a built in TV and stereo headset.’ Barrack was a little perplexed by this and said, ‘But you don’t look like you’re handicapped. The kid said, ‘I will be after my dad finds out I saved you from drowning.’

  7. I don’t get all the right-wing support at MacDailyNews. Apple is quite clearly a liberal company. They believe in equal rights for all, for example. The Republican party just had a Congressman say that raped women have a natural defense mechanism against pregnancy, for goodness sake. I’d prefer that the comments stick to products and innovation. In face, can the mods get on this and get rid of all political nutbaggery for say, a day? a week? Please make the idiocy stop.

    1. “…Apple is quite clearly a liberal company…” By the way.. have you noticed how the left has turned unabashedly anti-Apple?

All the left wing “intelligentsia” from the New York Times, to all the stupid groups that blame Apple for all slave labor in china, to all the radical environmentalists who Apple can’t do anything to satisfy, to the LGBTXYZ groups that think Apple needs to have all employees strip and have same sex relations to prove their loyalty and so on, yet from the right Apple gets admiration, applause, and respect.

But as you say, Apple is clearly a lefty company. Kinda funny huh?

      1. Nope. Haven’t noticed at all. I’m a liberal, and an Apple shareholder, and a self admitted Apply fanboy, and I own a lot of Apple products. And yes, Apple is clearly on the left side of many social issues in the US. Even your king Rush Limbaugh concedes Apple is a liberal company. As for your garbage that gay groups want all Apple employees to strip and have same sex relations??? It’s utterly laughable. Don’t you realize the amount of harm you do to your own cause by spreading such ridiculous FUD???

  8. the article states, “Obama remains frustrated with the bickering by Hill Democrats.”

In other words, he’s in the same boat as the rest of us.

Until Congress gets off their fat asses and streamlines tax code, regulation, and other current playing-field-tilting partisan gerrymandering that has worked its way into Federal code for the last 5 decades, there is nothing Obama or any other president can do to seriously improve anything. Today the president cannot create jobs without deficit spending; he cannot change a horrid tax code to incentivize “job creators” to do what they claim they do. The president can’t even halt most federal spending, as most of the budget is baked in long-term contracts that cannot be turned off without substantial penalties. Of course, that doesn’t stop partisan parrots from their annoying snipes.

Personalizing everything one doesn’t like by invoking the “blame the president” game is what mentally weak dweebs do on both partisan sidelines. Finding the people with the power and the constitutional rights to solve the problems takes a little more foresight.

Here’s a summary of what your 112th Congress did for you:
    http://www.congress-summary.com/B-112th-Congress/Laws_Passed_112th_Congress_Seq.html

Note the lack of progress on any substantial economic issues whatsoever; instead Congress saw fit to debate and pass fluff like the “United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Reform and Reauthorization Act of 2011” or the “United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act” or the “Church Plan Investment Clarification Act”. Meanwhile our tax code incentivizes offshoring of wealth and jobs, while putting the prosperity of the middle class at great risk.

In 2010 we heard from the extreme right how a “divided congress” would be better to check Obama’s “radical liberalism”. Now we have a corrupt do-nothing Congress that refuses to do the people’s business. Thank you very much Boehner and Reid. Don’t let the door hit you partisan dunderheads on the way out.

In 2012, all senators and representatives from the corrupt mainstream parties ought to be thrown out and replaced by people who put the nation first, well ahead of any party or organizational affiliation. Nothing will improve until Rs and Ds are both put back in their rightful places — under the watchful protection of an educated populace.

  9. Socialism vs. Capitolism 2012.

The US became a socialist nation the instant obamacare passed. Next stop communism.

    He is the enemy.

    No use pointing it out…..
America will get what it deserves, one way or the other.
