“On Friday, Taiwan’s Economics Minister Shih Yen-shiang urged the public to show more support for HTC Corp., a Taiwanese smartphone maker,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“The Minister stated that the ‘Public should cherish our own brand,'” Purcher reports. “The remarks came after HTC released their revenue report amid fierce competition from Apple and Samsung.”
Purcher reports, “The Taiwanese government is now working on providing a better environment and offering assistance to Taiwan’s smartphone makers, including integrating industry supply chains, launching an application processor development project and more, according to the Minister.”

I agree with you about trying to support their own country.
As I recall, the U.S. Olympic teem was criticized for wearing a uniform to the opening ceremony that was made in China.
Interesting criticism considering that we (the U.S.) buys everything else from China.
Less than a week ago I posted that Americans should support Apple, if for no othet reason than, because other countries nationalistic populations support their home companies because they realize that protecting and supporting contributors to your economic base produces jobs and boosts your GNP…

Adding to your point and kicking it up a notch, the American government could do more to support large companies that provide jobs.
Taxes, regulations, politics, unionized labor, liability and on and on need sensible reforms for American companies to thrive and grow.
We’ve already seen the decline of textile, steel, manufacturing et al and too many companies moving on.
Recall in the 1960s a lot of products made in Japan. My uncle was a strong union supporter and used to say, “Japanese junk.” In the 1980s Pakistan and surrounding countries made a lot of products as well as Mexico. South America is growing and we all know about China in 2012.
Elected officials can wish for jobs all day long. They should do much better than that.

I imagine that a lot of people might agree with your statement, Coal Cracker. It is easy to make a general statement like that, but much harder to develop a detailed plan and even more difficult to implement it in today’s political climate. One of the keys is how the term “sensible” is defined. Your definition might not match mine.
I’m sure if one does a cost-benefit analysis, Apple contributes far more to the Taiwanese economy than HTC.
Well Foxconn (Hon Hai) is a Taiwanese company. So yeah, it probably does.
Now HTC is really dead. Any goverment in any country that dares to involve in a private company business, ends up destroying it. They’re helping Apple.
Amen, brother.
Time for Apple to look for an alternative producer of components maybe in a country that really understands the value they bring!
“Please buy inferior product to shore up undeserving tech company with products no one wants so we can stay in business.” Yeah that won’t send out a red flag of distress to avoid them like the plague now will it?
asking a person to voluntarily spend their hard earned money on an inferior product just be cause it is the Home product is silly and bad for the consumer.
