“A couple of weeks ago iMore reported that Apple would be holding their iPhone 5 event on September 12, 2012,” Rene Ritchie reports for iMore, citing “sources that have provided iMore with accurate iPhone related launch dates in the past.”
“We’ve since learned that iPhone 5 pre-orders are currently planned to begin that same day, at least in the U.S.,” Ritchie reports. “Release is still planned for 9 days later, on September 21, 2012.”
Ritchie reports, “We’ve also learned that the second wave of iPhone launches, the ones in international markets, will begin in the first week of October, likely October 5.”

Why do these writers insist on calling it iPhone 5. It will not be called that. There will not be an iPhone called iPhone 5, ever.
You know this to be a fact? Cite your sources, or shut up.
Get a life!
Lets call it the Apple Galaxy S IIII and see how the copier likes them apples.
Hee hee, good one. Wouldn’t that be fun?
No, because I’d have to write “Apple Galaxy S IIII” every time I’m posting to MDN, and that would just make me very, very tired.
I suppose the next gen iPhone could be called “The new iPhone”
That would work – until next year.
2014 the NEWER IPHONE
2016 the NEWEST IPHONE
2017 the NEWEST OF THE NEW IPHONE
2019 the NEW NEWEST OF THE NEW IPHONE
etc
worst naming convention EVER!
Cars don’t get new names each year – except maybe the Mustang II. Computers and smartphones don’t need them either. Just calling it the iPhone and the year it was made is fine. The year will let you know what CPU and screen and features it has.
Yes, last time I checked the rest of the Apple Mac line didn’t have this problem. An iMac is an iMac. A Mac Book Pro is a Mac Book Pro, the most current model being now available!
However, it does make it more difficult to locate compatible components, like a hard drive or RAM, because you can’t just say “I have an ’09 iMac”, you have to look up the serial number, or model, or some distinctive feature.
If I have an iPhone 5, people automatically know what’s included, it’s easy to find cases, etc. that fit or work with it.
In a couple of years, will an iPhone accessory that works with the “New iPhone” work with the iPhone 5, 6, 7, 4S, or all?
