For comparison, open a PDF–preferably with vector images, but even text-only is fine. Zoom in–with multitouch trackpad if possible, so it goes through many zoom levels instead of just 100%, 125%, 200%, etc. The text or vector image always remains sharp.

Now, this wasn’t a 100% fair comparison, since the Maps app only loads data needed for whatever zoom level it’s at, so we don’t expect to see smaller roads in the “big picture”… but IMHO the major roads that were visible then, should not have gotten so blurry when zooming in. That’s what I thought I’d see when the article said it was vector-based.

Anyway my point was that if Lordthree thinks that street view is a gimmick, why isn’t Flyover?

@Really, yep, it was on the Trans-Canada highway as we entered Calgary.

Since the perspective appears to be several hundred feet in the air, I could see how it would be useful… if one flew like a bird. Doesn’t seem all that practical for street level driving.

Outside of the novelty, I find 3D map views to be cluttered looking and visually confusing.

Google’s street view, on the other hand, has been very useful. Particularly when trying to locate a particular building in an area I’ve never been to. Especially since building numbers aren’t always visible from the street, if they exist at all.

What the article’s claiming is that iOS6 Maps are entirely vector-based. Can’t wait for iOS6 to come out to verify that personally.

This video doesn’t settle the matter; zooming in using iOS6 Maps does seem pretty fluid, but no more so than the iOS5 Maps.app I just tried on my 4S. And near the end, when zooming in to start navigation, it’s clearly a blurry bitmap for a second or two before the more detailed local map loads.

We’ll talk again when I get my flying car.

The Google version may have too much info, but you can at least mentally filter out info you don’t need, like you do with traditional paper maps. You can’t mentally add info that’s just not there. I mean sure, don’t label minor roads until you’re zoomed in enough, but major freeways not being labelled?

I’ll reserve final judgement til the iOS6 is officially out, but if these things aren’t brought up in beta they sure aren’t going to be fixed.

I didn’t remember seeing a speed limit sign though. Pulled it up on GMaps Street View and found it–far enough back and easy to miss if you were in the fast lane. Bastards.

Find an address or drop a pin. If Street View is available for it, there’ll be an orange circled person on the left of the results label. Tap on it, the view automatically goes to landscape, and there you go. Rotate and zoom as you would any other iPhone app from Apple.

You’re actually using the street view to read street signs? Seems odd, since all the streets are actually labeled right down the middle of all the streets…

Have you actually used the maps in iOS6 yet?

I think I can actually get a better view of the placement of buildings in relation to others, etc. using the 3D view (on “Hybrid”) provided by iOS6. Now I am generally only in highly populated areas, so that may make a difference.

I previously liked street view because that was all that was available, but this way is MUCH faster and better than having to “walk” down the streets a few steps at a time…

Well, Google Maps will still be available for anyone who still chooses to use it.

The only thing I hope Apple wont do, is leave this app at its current stage (just enough to be ahead of google for the time being) and not update it afterwords for the growing cliental. Like how they did with iWork suit for Mac, iWeb, iTunes (in a way)…

Apples solution; i am hoping it is far better.
I am just saying that a street view function, be it Apples’ or Googles’ – is a useful function for me on many occasions.

Also, a rather fun experience too.

This goes way beyond the tallness of buildings.

Streetview on the other hand is so clunky to use. I’m betting Apple will have full 3D mapping in many places by the time iOS 6 comes out.
