the way I see it, *most* people do not use the street view..
the few that do, for whatever reason, are not the majority. Google sells the maps data.. When the switch is made, google will lose money. (there are other articles on this here at MDN)
it's a lose-lose situation for Google, no two ways about it.

3D view is more than enough anyway.

My earlier post wasn't clear--it's not the speed at all that's making me wonder about the vector back-end. I'm referring to the zoom-in starting at 1:45. The major roads got blurry until the labels appear and map sharpens.

For comparison, open a PDF--preferably with vector images, but even text-only is fine. Zoom in--with multitouch trackpad if possible, so it goes through many zoom levels instead of just 100%, 125%, 200%, etc. The text or vector image always remains sharp.

Now, this wasn't a 100% fair comparison, since the Maps app only loads data needed for whatever zoom level it's at, so we don't expect to see smaller roads in the "big picture"... but IMHO the major roads that were visible then, should not have gotten so blurry when zooming in. That's what I thought I'd see when the article said it was vector-based.

Not sure I get the appeal of (faux) 3D views. Yeah, they look neat, but what's the point? (It reminds me of the stupid "page-turn" effect in many digital publications) Does it actually add anything truly necessary/useful to the map reading experience?

Since the perspective appears to be several hundred feet in the air, I could see how it would be useful... if one flew like a bird. Doesn't seem all that practical for street level driving.

Hmmm... is Apple preparing for a future with flying cars? :-)

Outside of the novelty, I find 3D map views to be cluttered looking and visually confusing.

Google's street view, on the other hand, has been very useful. Particularly when trying to locate a particular building in an area I've never been to. Especially since building numbers aren't always visible from the street, if they exist at all.

Agree on the usefulness of Street view, but the point about bitmaps is that while Google Maps is all vector-based on the back-end, it's rendered on the iPhone and desktop GMaps too as bitmaps. For the latter, you can verify by going somewhere in Google Maps and bring up the Activity window in Safari--you'll see a bunch of things from mt1.google.com, double-click any of them and you'll load a bitmap image.

What the article's claiming is that iOS6 Maps are entirely vector-based. Can't wait for iOS6 to come out to verify that personally.

This video doesn't settle the matter; zooming in using iOS6 Maps does seem pretty fluid, but no more so than the iOS5 Maps.app I just tried on my 4S. And near the end, when zooming in to start navigation, it's clearly a blurry bitmap for a second or two before the more detailed local map loads.

The Google version may have too much info, but you can at least mentally filter out info you don't need, like you do with traditional paper maps. You can't mentally add info that's just not there. I mean sure, don't label minor roads until you're zoomed in enough, but major freeways not being labelled?

I'll reserve final judgement til the iOS6 is officially out, but if these things aren't brought up in beta they sure aren't going to be fixed.

Not just street names. I got a photo radar speeding ticket in a city I visited. It's right as a freeway turns into a city highway, so it drops from 100 to 80 km/h... and everyone's doing at least 120 coming in, since it's a long, straight freeway coming out from the Rockies.

I didn't remember seeing a speed limit sign though. Pulled it up on GMaps Street View and found it--far enough back and easy to miss if you were in the fast lane. Bastards.

It's built right into the current (iOS 3 to 5) Maps app--made by Apple, using Google data and APIs.

Find an address or drop a pin. If Street View is available for it, there'll be an orange circled person on the left of the results label. Tap on it, the view automatically goes to landscape, and there you go. Rotate and zoom as you would any other iPhone app from Apple.

Street view is very useful to look at real estate. We have been lookong to buy a new home and while things like Zillow and Trulia etc have images street view is great for looking at surrounding area. You can in effect drive around a neighborhood without leaving home.
Oh, and Google maps are vector based, you cannot calculate routes from images. All automobile GPS mapping systems are vector based. Of course the photos in maps and Google Earth and street view are images, but the roads are vectoe lines. This article is incrrect about that.

"Sorry, no 3D image of a sign shape can replace what the sign says."

You're actually using the street view to read street signs? Seems odd, since all the streets are actually labeled right down the middle of all the streets...

Have you actually used the maps in iOS6 yet?

I think I can actually get a better view of the placement of buildings in relation to others, etc. using the 3D view (on "Hybrid") provided by iOS6. Now I am generally only in highly populated areas, so that may make a difference.

I previously liked street view because that was all that was available, but this way is MUCH faster and better than having to "walk" down the streets a few steps at a time...

Well, Google Maps will still be available for anyone who still chooses to use it.

Lose street view? Sorry, no 3D image of a sign shape can replace what the sign says. I use street view virtually every time I am looking for a specific place, not just the route to get there. There is SO substitute for a picture of the location, 3D shape just will not cut it. I am an Apple fan but this is one time I will just flip to using my Google earth and it's street view. It has search functions too and I will have to limp along with it until Apple comes up with street view. I would call and tell Apple about this, but I will forgo the torture of listening to their abysmal hold music. (Has anyone else noticed that despite their cash horde, they purchase hold music from the thrift store?)

I agree Praus,

Apples solution; i am hoping it is far better.
I am just saying that a street view function, be it Apples' or Googles' - is a useful function for me on many occasions.

Also, a rather fun experience too.

Can't you see that once your have the 3D data for maps you can render the world almost like a 3D game (think FPS) for you to roam around freely?

This goes way beyond the tallness of buildings.

The navigation of Apple's new iOS6 maps is superb, it's amazing how quickly you can zoom in/out, rotate, or change the altitude angle. It's like the maps are alive under your fingers.

Streetview on the other hand is so clunky to use. I'm betting Apple will have full 3D mapping in many places by the time iOS 6 comes out.
