There are many potential reasons for a slow Mac and "spiny" wheels. The advice from others is sound - a RAM upgrade generally provides the best bang for the buck. But I am running OS X 10.7.4 on a 2007 Intel iMac with 4GB RAM (667 MHz) and it is working fine. I did not notice a reduction in performance from Snow Leopard. So it is entirely possible that it is not your 2009 Mac Pro hardware. Do some research. Consider consulting with a Mac genius. Because I can absolutely guarantee that no release of OS X is like Vista.

Since I bought my first Mac in 2007 I have bought every new OS release the week of. Lion has made me a little gun shy. Snow Leopard was awesome and made my 2009 MacBook Pro run better but Lion has made me feel like I installed Vista or something. It made my Mac very slow & sluggish with constant spiny wheels. So I am with those who have had issues with Lion. I am going to take a wait and see on this one.
