Something a lot of people misunderstand is that, here in the US, the people are the government. Yes, you are: “***We the People*** of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” You elect people to *represent* you in Congress and the Oval Office. So yes, if you understand your role in the government, which is society, is our country, and our civil duty, then the government can solve most any problem because it should have the most proper people representing the population. The problem is, we have many (not all) people who sleep with corporations, have their own agendas and the like and they are who run for office and get elected.

While many people see the government as the problem, well, they elected them and put them there. So go ahead an elect someone like Romney, and you can live happy knowing that you’ve elected the same as all the rest; a bigoted, corporate and rich serving, two-faced, double talking fool. That is to say, the exact kind of person who we separated ourselves from in 1776. If you think Romney is any better than Obama, you live in a dreamworld. If the government can not help the people, then the people can not help themselves.

His statements reflect his warped socialist views–particularly each time he cluelessly refers to the term ‘middle class’. He unfortunately did not mask/filter his terminology well enough to serve to the mainstream public on this particular occasion. In a 2nd term (w/ nothing to lose) you could easily see Obama becoming more ‘Chavez-like’ as far as nationalizing resources & assets.

What we need is what the gentleman above says – two parties that will work together, not a right wing bunch of Tea Party idiots devoted to keeping the ni**er out of the White House for four more years. Don’t ry to tell me that’s not what’s happening, all three top Republican leaders have gone on record – recorded – as saying that the TPO priority for the Republicans this term of Congress is to make Obama a one-term President.

And everything they’ve done is devoted to just that. Obstruction, game playing, gamesmanship, whatever they can do to keep the economy from getting better so the numbers will still look bad in November.

Then they nominate this “businessman” (who’s been running for President for eight years at least) who has the worst possible record to run on at this point in time, has a much lower personal approval rating than Obama, and who refuses to release his tax returns and is doing everything he can to distract from that refusal. None of which is likely to make his election any easier, or even likely.

Top all that off with Republicans in the States backing as many batshit crazy ideas about abortion, contraceptives and who knows what other truly unpopular crap (like voter id laws) as they can and you’ve got a party that seems determined to blow this election.

And those wonderful budget surplus years? They were brought to you by a Republican Congress and a Democratic President, meaning bi-partisan cooperation. Notice what happened to the budget and the debt once the Republicans got a Republican President too!

Running my own business, I was shocked at the cost of ‘private insurance’ I was even more shocked when they told me I would not be able to use the insurance for the things I needed it for. Mainly my wires asthma and allergies and my kids allergies.

I asked them what the point of having it was? ‘Emergencies’ they said. 1200+ a month for emergencies? I told em I would roll the dice instead, I started a medical savings account.

Insurance is a racket and the consumer almost always gets hosed. This levels the field a bit..

First, the government was created to provide for, among the other things you mention, the General Welfare. That includes all those things Obama mentioned above like roads, and other infrastructure, to include a regulatory environment designed to protect the American Consumer and allow businesses to do business in a safe environment that does not favor any particular type of business, like big over little, etc. In other words, a level playing field.

Also, businesses do not just “create” jobs. Especially just out of thin air, even if they have record profits. They create jobs when they have a demand for their products which exceeds the capacity of their current workforce to provide for. That’s called “growth” in economic terms.

The reason recessions are so damaging is that people lose jobs, and when they lose jobs, they have to stop spending, since they are BROKE. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy does NOTHING to stimulate jobs, since they already have money, but since there isn’t any excess demand, they aren’t going to spend any of it on jobs – why would they?

Stimulus bills like the infrastructure bill, DO tend to create jobs, since it provides money for the government to contract with private firms to fix real, physical things, which takes real people to physically repair.

Hence, those private firms must HIRE more people to work, thus decreasing the unemployment rate, and putting that money in those new workers’ pockets which they will then SPEND, thus spreading that stimulus money around the economy with each subsequent transaction.

That’s how you begin to recover from a recession.
