Mitt Romney can only make a point by taking someone’s comment out of context. Again he only selects a small portion of what the President stated: namely that businesses succeed because they are able to use the infrastructure built with public funds.
What, exactly, was taken out of context?
It sounds to me that he said exactly what he meant.
Look up the meaning of the word “context”.

The “it” Obama is referring to us not the business that was built. It refers to the infrastructure that allowed the business to be built.
I’m perfectly happy to contribute to fire services, police, roads, national defense, and other types of infrastructure that benefit all citizens.
I am not happy to see my hard-earned money taken from me and then wasted on Senators’ pet projects, a government run ponzi scheme (Socialism Insecurity), a heath care boondoggle that will do nothing but make health care and everything else more expensive, bail outs to unions (GM), “investments” in “alternative energy” companies that go belly up 10 months later, presidential vacations and tee times in the worst recession in memory, etc., etc., etc.

As someone who has started several businesses (e.g., one of two people who started one business, one of four who started another, one of five who started a third, etc.) and as someone who has dealt with more than my share of vulture capitalists wealthy, angel investors as well as “shoestring startups”, I can tell you first hand with absolute certainty it is not taxes or government regulations or the courts that keeps 99.99% of businesses from getting going. It is fear. Fear of failure. People don’t start businesses because they are afraid the might not succeed. Blaming the government (local, state or federal) for a business not being started and growing is 99.99% of the time pure, unadulterated BULL.

10-12 – Taxpayer dollars come from my pocket and yours. The question is whether the government can engage in worthwhile ventures that generally benefit our population. The space program, national highways, transportation systems and, in fact, the internet. There are ventures that the government will undertake that are entirely appropriate for it to attempt. It will not always work out. Unfortunately, we pulled the plug on our super collider and the European venture in Switzerland, CERN, now leads the way in this research. We do not. In any case, the scale of that venture and the lack of clarity of a return on investment made it prohibitive for private companies to undetake. Many companies that are “private” benefitted tremendously from the space program. Similarly, road construction, while paid for with tax dollars, is generally done by private firms.

I’m afraid “His Shadow” is right on this one. When I first heard the quote, I thought “No one can be that stupid. Not even Barrack Obama.” So I went and read the entire speech. He was speaking of infrastructure as His Shadow indicates. At the same time though, if you expand even further back on the quote, I take offense to the comments about there being plenty of smart people and plenty of hard working people around.
This is not true. In addition he was pandering to his audience, essentially telling them, “If you’re not successful, it’s not your fault. It’s because no one has helped you.”
Businesses, especially small businesses in this country are the foundation upon which our success is built. Entrepreneurial spirit, drive, goal orientation, the desire to win, creativity, vision do not come from the friking government, they don’t come from one or two good teachers, and they sure as hell don’t come from infrastructure.
Bottom line: Obama thinks of government as the solution to most every problem, not the problem standing in the way of most every solution.

You leave a few things out.
First, the government was created to provide for, among the other things you mention, the General Welfare. That includes all those things Obama mentioned above like roads, and other infrastructure, to include a regulatory environment designed to protect the American Consumer and allow businesses to do business in a safe environment that does not favor any particular type of business, like big over little, etc. In other words, a level playing field.
Also, businesses do not just “create” jobs. Especially just out of thin air, even if they have record profits. They create jobs when they have a demand for their products which exceeds the capacity of their current workforce to provide for. That’s called “growth” in economic terms.
The reason recessions are so damaging is that people lose jobs, and when they lose jobs, they have to stop spending, since they are BROKE. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy does NOTHING to stimulate jobs, since they already have money, but since there isn’t any excess demand, they aren’t going to spend any of it on jobs – why would they?
Stimulus bills like the infrastructure bill, DO tend to create jobs, since it provides money for the government to contract with private firms to fix real, physical things, which takes real people to physically repair.
Hence, those private firms must HIRE more people to work, thus decreasing the unemployment rate, and putting that money in those new workers’ pockets which they will then SPEND, thus spreading that stimulus money around the economy with each subsequent transaction.
That’s how you begin to recover from a recession.
The general welfare clause is to enact laws that PROMOTE the general welfare, NOT provide for it. Very big difference, you might want to read it again. And if stimulus bills create jobs, where are they? Why have so many green companies filed for bankruptcy and people lost jobs? ‘The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other peoples money’.

I can’t pretend to really understand the deep and very unsettling problems our great nation faces today. I am worried about the future my two kids will face when they are my age and trying to raise they’re own children. One problem I can identify is our nation’s inability to hold a respectful dialog about the issues, without insulting one another or our elected president, be he George W. Bush or Barack Obama.
Regardless of the reality, we look to our presidents for leadership and responsibility in good times and especially bad. I think our recent presidents have faced some serious challenges, and I feel they honestly did what they truly believed was right for our nation at the time. I can’t honestly tell you whether Barack Obama is a good president or not, I can’t really tell whether George W. Bush was either. Not enough time has passed for the judgement of history (as former president Bush said himself) to render a decision. The problems our nation faces did not start with the election of Obama, nor did they begin with Bush.
Instead of admonishing our leaders, we should focus on finding our common ground again. Stop pointing fingers like children, and move forward. I have seen many things Obama has done that disappointed me tremendously. I voted for him in 2008 for his high minded speaking about compromise and bipartisanship. I don’t know who started the bickering; I think it was going on long before he ran for office, but it has, and continues to get worse. President Obama has not risen above the fray as he promised he would. I feel that is his greatest failure as President.
In regards to our current crisis, I feel that Republicans and Democrats are both equally to blame, and both equally disgusting. Mitt Romney seems to say whatever he thinks will make the most people listening at the moment, the happiest. His record at Bain Capitol is concerning. He is a successful business man, and exporting jobs has been the status quo in business cost cutting efforts for two decades now. As a result of all those jobs leaving our shores, more and more people face unemployment, lower pay, and a much reduced standard of living. The economy spirals out of control because common folk have less and less money to spend on goods that fuel its success. This trend has nothing to do with policies instituted by either Obama, Bush or Romney, but it is impossible for Romney to claim he didn’t attribute to this glaring problem or at least profit handsomely from this practice as people got laid off in favor of cheaper labor in other parts of the world by Bain Capitol.
Republicans would have the American people forget that under President Bush, government spending skyrocketed, our deficits exploded and our nation tore itself apart politically. Corporations like Enron ran amok and ruined tens of thousands of lives, our banking system teetered on the brink of collapse and the housing bubble exploded, resulting in an economic shockwave that still reverberates throughout the world. No one can deny that these things happened on Republican watch, but Democrats had their equal share in committing these atrocities in the face of the American dream.
Instead of bearing down on our recklessness, we borrowed even more heavily from the very people we gave our jobs away to. Instead of investing in our future (education, infrastructure and technology) we squandered our lead by waging unilateral wars and frightened our own people with propaganda to distract them. Our politicians tore at each others’ throats and lobbyists manipulated our future with money from multinational corporations with not a shred of loyalty to the United States, but only to their stock holders.
As we rearrange the chairs on the deck of this beautiful ship, our America sails blissfully on, straight into iceberg after iceberg. I have no idea what needs to happen for things to turn around—really turn around, not another internet bubble, or housing bubble—I’m sick of bubbles! I’m tired of gamesmanship with the goals of only short term money grabs at the expense of our collective future. When are we going to admit that no one really knows how to fix this mess? Not Obama, not Romney, not Congress. Solutions for these problems are not going to suddenly emerge like a dreamer from sleep in the next four years through the magic of hope or someone’s election. People can say what they want. Cry about the issues they hold dear, carry signs and call out slogans. No single election will solve our problems.
The only things I care about in this world, the things I hold most dear, are the two beautiful children who rely on me to prepare them for life… and the American dream. Without the dream, there is no hope, no future for them. Our polarized infighting has paralyzed us in the face of an extinction event. Our fight or flight reflexes have turned us against each other instead of the real issues. I don’t know how we’ll do it. I don’t know who will light the way—I don’t even know if the path is to the right or left. I do know the only way there is together.

No, Government did NOT invent the Internet. Private companies doing research under contracts paid for by government funds invented parts of the Internet but the Internet as we know it today was invented at private companies who invested their capital, time and expertise to develop the technologies that are incorporated into the multifaceted, millions of interconnected machines that make up the Internet. The government does not even maintain the servers that are the backbone of the Internet.
Similarly, the government really has built very little of the infrastructure of our nation. Instead, that infrastructure was built by PRIVATE companies, or publicly held corporations who bid on contracts to design and build the public highways, water projects, and those few publicly own power systems, and the limited number of government buildings. The REST of the infrastructure was built by private companies, entrepreneurs, corporations, and the businesses of America who built them to make a profit! Not, as Obama thinks, by the government. Even most of our residential streets were built by developers, not by government entities, purely on speculation in the hope that the houses the developer would build on those streets would sell for sufficient prices to pay for the houses AND the streets, sewage pipes, water service pipes, and other infrastructure the DEVELOPER built, not the government. In the SAME fashion, an office or industrial park’s developer builds the infrastructure and incorporates those costs into his lease or selling prices for his real estate. Government has very little to do with it except to make sure the developer does it right. . . And that the planning and zoning is done correctly to handle traffic in the area, and that the developer is charged sufficient impact fees to handle the changes required to the surrounding area, which the developer will properly add as costs to his selling prices. This is Econ 101, which Obama flunked or never took in those college course the records of which he has hermetically sealed so that no one can know what he did or did not study, or passed, or flunked!

And DARPA was composed of CONTRACTORS, private companies, under contract… not government employees. Yes, the government PAID for the work, but it was private contract scientist, engineers, and workers who did the thinking, creating, engineering, and development… BUREAUCRATS invent nothing. Usually, they stand in the way. DARPA did not set out to invent the communications system that was developed to allow engineers and scientists to intercommunicate easily. They developed it to get around the roadblocks the system had put in place.
Tim Berners Lee invented the Internet to solve a problem at CERN… his work was not sanctioned, specified, nor ordered by the management.
The INFRASTRUCTURE it runs on top of was the phone lines at that time… put in place be private companies… again proving my point, although regulated by government, it is STILL not created by government.

Yes, I could (my degree is in economics), but Kensian economics has never worked because it requires that the government funds expended during recessions—whether from saved surpluses or borrowed for the purpose—be PAID BACK into the treasury by lower spending during boom times… which has never happened. The first nodes on the ‘net were universities NOT businesses. Businesses did not see any value or put any effort into the ‘net (that was not paid for by government funds under government contract and per government requirements and specifications) until many, many years after the ‘net was started.

When Steve had dinner with Obama, Obama asked how to bring jobs back from overseas to America. Steve gave him standard conservative answers. He said those jobs are never coming back. He said that in the current climate of over regulation it was impractical. He told Obama if he wanted Apple to bring home any of the 75 or so billion dollars they have languishing overseas, that Obama should provide a permanent tax break for corporations.
Jobs like to play the hippie, but when it came to business, he was rational.

You missed the point. Government is the product of individual success that at some point in time needed regulation. These prior individuals created a body that could over see and balance this. The government that was created by the innovations of business and by the same innovative people. Making the government the secondary development of bussiness Government created nothing. Why should we look to the created and say the government will be the one that is best to choose for the creator. Business came first. Government was another innovation of business. Why say all that have created a business should not claim it as yours? Rather it was allowed by the government who built the roads,etc, etc… It was business that forseen these problems and crated the government so business could further expand more effectively. Government is a product and innovation of business. Which was created by it own methods outside of government.

You should be scared because the wheels are coming off the Romney campaign and Obama is going to destroy him in the debates. The Republicans only hope is to get ultra nasty and racist and its going to backfire on them. Romney is about the worst possible candidate for this time in history. Steve jobs and apple inspire me every day to use and create things with the customer in mind. I’m proud of apple, of America and what we can achieve. I’m disappointed in our government, or politicians and the media as they attempt to skew facts and others accomplishments for their own personal gains. Steve Jobs and Apple inspire me every day to create software and solutions with the customer in mind. I could not be more proud of apple and what they have accomplished. On the flip side I could not be more disappointed in our selfish politicians who attempt to use others accomplishments and twist them into their own personal gain. Our politicians should be attempting to create an environment that encourages innovation and personal growth, not one that is selfish, misdirected and party based. We need to hold them accountable and not be fools to their political mind games.

Romney won’t release his tax forms because it will then be clear how he profited on the backs of hard working americans that lost their jobs and healthcare so Romney could make millions and then deposit it in offshore accounts so he wouldn’t have to pay any taxes on it. But he won’t get away with it and he about to fall flat on his face. Romney would help the wealthy squeeze out another pound of flesh out of the working class. After Bush drained billions out of the economy for the rich and left the country in shambles you would think you might learn something. All I know is I am in the top bracket, and like anyone else I’d like to pay less. While the IRS in nitpicking over whether I can deduct my cell phone (I’m a physician, on call often) Romney is deducting 77,000 buck for his dressage horse. Yeah, I’d like to buy a dressage horse as an investment… But of course my accountant would giggle and say not on your life. This country is great because of the infrastructure… Not because some Bain tax dodger pays 14% on his income.
