Samsung posts record quarterly profit on Galaxy phone sales

“Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s largest maker of televisions and mobile phones, posted a record quarterly profit that beat analysts’ estimates as surging sales of Galaxy smartphones helped it challenge Apple Inc.’s iPhone,” Jun Yang reports for Bloomberg.

“While seeking to cement its dominance in TVs with new models, Samsung is targeting record phone sales this year to keep its lead over Apple, a key customer it’s also been fighting in global patent lawsuits,” Yang reports. “Operating profit may be 200 billion won higher or lower than today’s preliminary estimate when audited results are announced later this month, Samsung said. The company didn’t provide net income for the quarter or divisional earnings.”

Yang reports, “Shipments of the Galaxy S III, the latest version of Samsung’s best-selling smartphone line-up, probably totaled 7 million units by the end of June since the model went on sale the previous month, Song Myung Sup, a Seoul-based analyst at HI Investment & Securities Co., said in a June 27 report.”

  1. How will investors feel about the size of those profits with looming lawsuit rulings, possible settlements or fines, and having the tap shut off?

Unfortunately for samsung stock holders in the future, they are likely to pay for what today’s shareholders have plundered.

  2. I’m probably going to have a love child with Charlize Theron this year. After that I’m probably going to be declared the King of the World, which will probably usher in another 10,000 years of prosperity and well-being.

  3. Sammy builds nice products several of which have little if anything to do with mobility or tablets. Samsung Global group of companies is 4 times larger than Apple. They will be fine and yes the Court battles will continue but with Sammy and Google teaming up on their patents defense, things are about to get interesting for Apple. I love my Apple gear but there is life outside the Apple world.

        1. a) I think he meant that as a joke. ???

          b) and then there is the definition of life. Some say that if you just duplicate (slavishly copy) and take over other efforts (steal IP) just so you can get bigger, then that is life…

Most of us just think its just being a virus. LOL

    1. ” Samsung Global group of companies is 4 times larger than Apple.”

That is grossly incorrect: The Samsung Global Group’s annual revenues are only about 40% larger than Apple’s and the Group’s net profits are about one-quarter as much as Apple’s.

(And, by the way, there is no life outside the Apple world. There is only a depressing, cold wasteland.)

        1. Dan and Ralph……like Batman and Robin? Or should I say like like Batman and Bruce Wayne. One and the same maybe.

You are on a site where people use a Mac instead of a PC. Meaning that we are not stupid to fall for your obvious “TROLL in disguise” routine. Now fuck off and play with your virus ridden joke of a copycat android.

  4. “Shipments of the Galaxy S III, the latest version of Samsung’s best-selling smartphone line-up, probably totaled 7 million units by the end of June.”

Probably? Yeah, you could probably make up any damn number you please since Samsung is apparently too embarrassed to publish its unit sales. So knock yourself out, Song Myung Sup.

  5. I wonder if those junk buying cheapskates without a sense of taste know that they are supporting a company that produces landmines, tanks, armed robots and other damnable stuff.

    1. Does it matter? Every tax payer in the USA is supporting the building of tanks, bombs etc on a far grander scale than Samsung.

The military is using iPads so I guess APPL shareholders should be concerned too!

  6. I will not be surprised to hear the following news someday…
“…Another Samsung executive has been gun down in his car with a post-it note “Copy This!!” stapled to his face…”

  7. Come on, MDN! The title of the article you quote was “Samsung Shares Decline After Second-Quarter Sales Miss Estimates”. But I would never guess that from your coverage!

  8. It came to me today that the Galaxy III was the next iPhone 5 but Samsung got a hold of it some how and produced it without a glitch. Apple didn’t have the proper protection in place. It sounds crazy but these were early picture

  9. Baloney.

Samsung has not released a breakdown by business segment. Wait a few weeks. WS shysters have chosen these apers as a foil to manipulate apple stock price since the true sales figures can be hidden due to samsungs diverse business segments.

Samsung has learned from bezos on how to obfuscate stuff. I suggest waiting a few weeks. I bet the pronouncements will not much the divisional sales for Samsung mobile.

  10. Samsung’s corporate nose must be at least 3 parsecs long by now. Their corp. sales are based on shipments which in turn are based on numbers pulled out of their ass, and Apple continues to take home over 70% of the cash pie and is laughing all the way to the bank.

  11. …probably totaled 7 million units by the end of June

EXCELLENT! That’s more damages Samsung will be paying to Apple for ripping them off.

Samsung is soooo screwed. By all means Samsung, dig your grave deeper!
