Pros and cons of Apple’s new MacBook Pro’s Retina display

“The display of Apple’s retina MacBook is a stunning piece of engineering. After spending a week with it here is an article that covers how it works and some of the problems you may face,” Richard Mallion writes for Amsys. “The Retina Display is an extremely high resolution panel at 2880 x 1800 pixels. This is 44.6% more pixels than Apple’s 27-inch Thunderbolt Display, and 26.6% more pixels than the old 30-inch panel. At 220 pixels per inch it’s easily the highest density consumer notebook panel shipping today.”

Mallion writes, “The flexibility offered by Apple’s handling of the Retina Display in OS X is unparalleled. What applications like Aperture, iPhoto, iMovie and Final Cut HD offer, is unbridled resolution independence. What Apple has done here is so much more difficult than what it pulled off in iOS with the Retina Display. It will take time for third party application developers to get on board, but with the Mac app store and Apple’s growing install base of Mac users we should see incredibly quick adoption of support for the MacBook Pro’s Retina Display.”

And some people have the gall to dismiss this MBP retina display technological achievement as not being sufficiently innovative and revolutionary… Just read the full article. It is an eye-opener.

Apple is not declining. Apple is simply dealing with 10x the scrutiny and 100x the expectations of any other tech company. Apple does need to put more emphasis on iWork, the Mac Pro, and a few other areas. But I have a hard time extrapolating those isolated weaknesses into a “sky is falling” mentality.

    I love the extra sound effects. I was blown away by how amateurish the Surface announcement was. The breathless excitement over the kick stand and 22° beveled edges only highlighted how few real innovations the device brings.

      um dude, ever tried to use a ipad in a plane, or on your lap? This is a big deal. Friggin genius to have a cover that’s a multi touch keyboard/ mouse…
      
      Oh and you can use it as a computer, not just as a toy! (a very expensive toy)

It is obvious that the visual appeal is lost when using some applications, and the fact that the LCD is more prone to scratches is a concern. The former problem can be solved with updated software while the latter is a design problem.

I’ve done a bit of research and found that the last 6 months of Apple news is hum-drum compared to what Apple used to do while dominating the world of high tech. The ONLY thing from WWDC was this Retina MBP which, as this article clearly illuminates, is pretty weak stuff compared to the WOW JUST WOW of yesteryear. iPhone 5 may be something more, but let’s keep our expectations about it being some of what used to be Apple magic under control. Top talent leaving Cupertino is further evidence of Apple’s descent into ordinary.

Okay – flame away fanbois… and don’t forget to over use the TROLL word – also way past tiresome these days.
