Google Chrome browser hits top spot in iOS free apps

“Less than 12 hours after initial release, Google Chrome is the number one free application on the iOS App Store,” Electronista reports.

“The new Webkit-based browser app supports the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, and requires iOS 4.3 or greater,” Electronista reports. “The iOS version shares its features with the desktop versions, which are available for Mac, Windows and Linux.”

Electronista reports, “Ironically, the iOS version of Chrome is available to a far wider percentage of iOS units than the just-released Android version, which requires Android 4.0 and thus only runs on about seven percent of current Android devices.”

      1. Tritto. It’s beyond comprehension how Google now has such a flock of sheep that are willing to give up every iota of privacy so Google can sell your data to whoever pays the bux.

It’s also beyond comprehension how so many people feel that the absolutely “need” whatever crapola Google puts out there.

        Boycott Google. Google is evil.

        1. Quadritto. (I agree whole heartedly, who wants their personal information dispensed to the highest bidder[s]?) but my main reason is… I’ve always wanted to use the word quadritto.

        2. Quintitto. You got it, Indentured1. Now step right up and take a swing at that awesome word representing the sixth iteration, the word I shall not name here. 🙂

    1. Because, believe it or not, there are still some websites which are not Safari friendly (annoying but true). Even mor annoying many of them are government sites. When I run into them now, I have an alternative. Simple as that.

    1. Can’t blame them for the speed, that’s on Apple. Because of the way the App Store rules are written, they can’t include their own rendering engine, so it’s basically just a skin for Safari. On top of that, it doesn’t even have access to the Nitro javascript engine that Safari does.

So, with the current implementation of the rules, it will never be as fast as Safari, let alone faster.

Now, the ugly thing, you can chastise them all you want.

  1. I cannot imagine why I would want Chrome on my iPhone or iPad. Goggle already has far too much information on me and my online habits; I don’t feel the need to invite them to know everything through what is hardly more than spyware.

    1. same here.

Anything google… I stay away from.
And from what I read yesterday safari and chrome are both using the same code (web kit) except chrome can’t use the nitro part of safari… And google even said it would be slower.

Chrome doesn’t get any space on any of my stuff, macs or iOS.

  2. I’m sure it will drop off the list in a couple of weeks. Many people are going to download and try it just out of curiosity more than any need.

But make sure your bank account info isn’t stored in your iPhone before opening up Chrome . . . .

  3. “Ironically, the iOS version of Chrome is available to a far wider percentage of iOS units than the just-released Android version, which requires Android 4.0 and thus only runs on about seven percent of current Android devices.”

    That’s fragmentation for ya! 😉
