Apple’s OS X Mountain Lion’s new Notes app has hidden tribute to famous Apple ad

“It’s not uncommon for Apple to hide little treats within the icons of its Mac apps, but it’s always nice when we stumble across a new one,” Killian Bell reports for Cult of Mac. “The latest comes with the new Notes application that will launch in OS X Mountain Lion next month, and it contains a famous quote used in Apple’s Think Different ad campaign.”

Here’s to the crazy ones.
The misfits. The rebels.
The the troublemakers.
The round pegs in the square holes.

The ones who see things different.
They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo.

    1. I would assume that pegs and holes come in various shapes. In the case of the Apple ad, they are actually round and square, respectively, as mister Dreyfuss specifies.

      1. One of the reasons, whether true or not I don’t know, is that the cover can’t fall into the manhole and kill someone working directly below even if it were moved over the opening accidentally.

And also I suppose if you have to move it to the side of the road or pavenment you were working on you could roll it along if you wanted.

And I suppose the third reason follows the logic of why submarine hatches are round, not square is that they make a better seal and are easier to stamp/manufacture to an appropriate thickness.

        1. As a former telephone man I can verify your first reason. The cover is reasonably perfectly round and sits on a lip. No matter which way you turn it, it can not fit into the opening. Ovals and polygons can be rotated so that they can be oriented such that they can fit through. I heard that this was one of the oddball questions Google asks job applicants.

  1. That quote has always been written on the TextEdit icon (more legibly too) It’s also on one of the cards in the drawer of the “All My Files” icon, does anyone know if these icons have changed at all in Mountain Lion?

  2. Very touching, the advert narrated by SJ, I mean. Anyone know who actually wrote those words? I always thought it was SJ, but the article seems to think it was Chiat of Chiat/Day.

    1. “And they did not know their holes from an ass on the ground”. ¶ And verily they became known throughout the Land as Holes of the clan Ass. ¶ And thus was brought into being a hated clan whose efforts at civilization were never true and even their Asses refused to work for them. ¶ Thus is is said that this clan, which embodied filth and dirt and evil, became simple the Lost Ass Holes. ¶ And that is the Word and it is good.

  3. I’ve always been ambivalent about that campaign. I mean, yeah, poetic, memorable — I can see why people remember it so fondly.

But it came from an era when Apple was having trouble selling Macs. And I highly doubt that commercial, as memorable as it was, sold one freakin’ computer.

As a piece of art, “Think Different” worked. As a commercial? I just dunno.

    1. For the masses, it likely wasn’t memorable but for people who like to be on the leading edge and who create things, this ad touched our hearts because we have always been considered the crazy ones who were marginalized but still fought to change the world.

      1. Yeah, it was probably intended to shore up the existing user base rather than attract new users.

Like Steve said before his return, if he was running Apple he’d milk the Mac for all it was worth and get started on the next big thing.

  4. Square Pegs and Round Holes:

    <A HREF="[TEXT OF LINK]” TARGET=”_blank”>Shapes Pegboard Picture

The shapes pegboard is a child training tool, common at ‘nursery schools’ for four year old kids. It is designed to help kids learn shapes. Put the triangle in the same shaped hole, etc.

But what if your child thinks outside the box (to use a metaphor) and thinks differently (to use proper grammar)??? They get SCOLDED! And have to ride the SMALL BUS to that OTHER SCHOOL!

But what if putting the square peg into the round hole is actually POSSIBLE and the result is something NEW and WONDERFUL?!

These days in the USA the country is going to hell thanks to herds of sheeple running around talking propagandist garbage fed to them by our dumbass Corporate Oligarchy, LoonLeftyLiberals, bizarro religions, etc. It’s a cacophony of STUPID. That is the metaphorical “BOX” right now with all its shape pegs fitting nicely into their same shaped holes.

What saves the day? What restores sanity? SMASHING THE PEG BOARD and doing something that goes against the POLITICALLY CORRECT PROPAGANDIST TRAINING:

The square peg in the young hole.

And that is why Apple THRIVES during this depressing era of dumbass sheeple. They remain sane be being that square peg in the round hole. BRAVO.
