Barclays sees Apple iPad upside, 7-inch model possible

“Barclays Capital‘s Ben Reitzes this afternoon opines in a note to clients that Apple (AAPL) will ‘extract more profits out of the traditional PC and mobile phone industries’ even as it maintains the lead in tablet computer sales with the iPad,” Tiernan Ray reports for Barron’s.

“Reitzes, who maintains an Overweight rating on the stock and a $750 price target, writes that fiscal Q3, the current quarter, and Q4 may both see the benefit of wider distribution of the iPad, making up for softer iPhone sales these two quarters, and there’s still a prospect for a 7-inch model of the tablet, he thinks,” Ray reports.

  1. The 7.85″ iPad can’t come soon enough. I love reading while holding material one-handed for an extended period and simply can’t manage it with the iPad–it’s too heavy. Therefore I have a Kindle and buy my ebooks exclusively from Amazon. I can’t switch to iBooks until Apple closes the huge gap between the iPhone and iPad.

  2. With my eyesight It’s tough enough reading small print on MDN and other websites with the current size iPad. Adding an extra 1” or 2” to width x height to the retina display would be much better than subtracting from it.

    1. Lucky for you there is this thing called zoom. It even has it’s own multi-touch gestures.

I work with a woman who is legal blind, she uses and loves her iPad2. She seems to handle it fine.

      Settings/General/Accessibility/zoom

Turn it on, double tap with three fingers. Drag with three fingers to view different areas of the screen.

  3. I have an interesting theory for why they will release a 7′ tablet in the next year.

With the price reduced iPad 2 they effectively created a new category – the macbook air to the pro. What will they do next year?
    Here are the options:

stop selling the iPad 2 and surrender the $399 market
price drop the new iPad to 399 (what do you call it? the Old new iPad?)
further reduce the price of the iPad 2
    introduce the iPad mini

Which one of these seems most logical?
