“Combined shipments of touch panels from TPK and Wintek to Apple in the second half of 2012 will equal one-third of shipments the two companied shipped in the first half, the sources estimated,” Han and Shen report.

Fix the headline, please! Shipments have not declined – the article states that shipments are expected to decline if apple starts creating a new phone with a new type of display.
Your headline implies that this process has started and is the indicator of a new phone. It has not and is not.
I’m pretty iPhone 4S will be offered by Apple at least a year or two after the new iPhone is released. So it is not at the end of its life cycle.
Way too soon for iPhone 5.
What a bunch of BS. The iPhone 4S will continue to be produced in large numbers as Apple’s lower priced model once the iPhone 5 comes out.
The reason for 15%-20% decline in production (IF its true) is only because Apple had so much pent-up demand from the iPhone 4S being delayed, plus the holiday shopping season, that people went nuts buying it.
