“On April 3, Google co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Larry Page sat down with Bloomberg Businessweek to discuss his first year at the helm of the technology giant, his plans for the future, and the company’s relationships with its competitors.,” Brad Stone reports.

People have been critical of your values of late. As in: As Google tries to compete with Facebook or Apple, is it sacrificing the contract they established with users 15 years ago?
I would—obviously—say no. Producing the best thing we possibly can for users is our paramount thing. I think we have demonstrated that over a very long period of time with a whole variety of different issues we’ve faced around the world. We would love to have better access to data that’s out there. We find it frustrating that we don’t. It’s the tendency of the Internet to move into a well-guarded state.
According to the Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson, when you became CEO you went to Jobs for advice. I know you had your differences at the end around Android, but what did you take from him as a mentor and a friend?
I think the Android differences were actually for show. I had a relationship with Steve. I wouldn’t say I spent a lot of time with him over the years, but I saw him periodically…

I think that served their interests. For a lot of companies, it’s useful for them to feel like they have an obvious competitor and to rally around that. I personally believe that it’s better to shoot higher. You don’t want to be looking at your competitors. You want to be looking at what’s possible and how to make the world better.

Didn’t Steve’s thermonuclear comment come in the context of a private conversation with Issacson? If so, how is it for show? How can Page not see that Steve was feigning passivity? How can Page (miserably) copy Steve’s mantra of changing the world, when he has no credibility, and when he’s referring to a product (android) that was blatantly copied with almost no added originality? Google went from creepy douche with Schmit, to pussy douche with Page. I’m transitioning away from all google products, and I’m hoping apple replaces google maps in the next iOS.

I think Page is twisting the situation. Jobs was pissed about Android because he thought it was a rip-off and that Eric Schmidt had, instead of appropriately recusing himself, used his board position to copy iOS. Such anger at Android/Schmidt/Google does not mean that when it came to iOS/iPhone/iPad that Jobs and the Apple team were doing anything other than what they always did – “looking at what’s possible and how to make the world better.”
Larry says, “You don’t want to be looking at your competitors.”
Yeah, Larry? If Google hadn’t been looking at Apple, there would be no Android as we know it. And if Google hadn’t used “The Mole” for industrial espionage, Apple wouldn’t be your competitor, they’d still be your partner. You and Yours effed up and I hope Android is finally killed in the courts for being the stolen property that it is .

for any scientific stuff, I use wolfram alpha. For anything else, Siri usually is enough. To search webpages, etc… I use Bing. If all else fails, after having tried yahoo, I will do a google search.
Agreed. I’m *TOTALLY* Google-free now and am always telling family and friends that they need to do the same. I used to like most of the Google stuff but an experience using Gmail told me that it was time to ditch Google completely.
I started corresponding with a business associate in Korea and we both used Korean in our emails. I had never paid attention to the ads that were popping up in the browser-based emails before but I started seeing all these Korean-word ads all of a sudden. And the ads were all about the stuff we were talking about. Man, that was such a creepy feeling.
I was like, “Geez, and I used to think Microsoft was evil. At least I can buy (or not buy) what I want from them if deemed worthy. I have no such choice with Google.” I always go by the motto that the opposite of love isn’t hate; it’s indifference. Well, I can’t be indifferent about Google…
I’m out there telling virtually everyone I meet how evil Google really is. I like to tell people about that scene from the movie ‘Minority Report’ where Tom Cruise is on the run in the city and he walks by an electronic billboard in a busy train station kind of a place that scans his retina and starts advertising stuff that he’s likely to buy again based on his past buying habits.
Well, *THAT* is what Google aims to be in the future and what their business model is based on. They draw you in to this “free” virtual space where your eyeballs can be fixated long enough for you to look at the ads that they’re selling to the highest bidders. This is all that Google is. They sell people and people’s info to the advertisers and that’s where 95%+ of their revenues come from.
Page and Schmidt can twist the words anyway they want but they’re just the highest-ranking bots in this disturbingly creepy and sinister Google system. They’ve succeeded in getting rational people in all walks of life to harbor utter hatred against them. Yes, it’s hatred and that means we care very much about their destruction.
Go immediately to the Apple site and find extensions for Safari. Download and install Ghostery for Safari. It blocks all third party marketing cookies. FU Google!

You release apps in the cloud and data mine the files stored on that cloud. You promote your google phone system and most likely grab info from users there too.

This quote is amazing. It’s a testament to Jobs that his approach is paraphrased even by those who do nothing of the sort. Google was solving its own problem, a platform guaranteed to run their ads. 25 years ago they would have created a cheaper DOS.

In Steve’s speech at STanford, he described how his near-death battle with cancer enabled him to toss aside the meaningless things and focus on what is truly important.
What was truly important to Steve was making great things, NOT blowing smoke, dancing in mirrors, making a show and inventing a ‘competitor’ to rally around.
Apple (Steve) rallied around serving their customers by making fantastic products. Apple’s only competition was, and is Apple.

I didn’t think much of Page before. Now he disgusts me.
Had my wife read this story to me while I was driving. The outrage in me got the best of me as I explained how this guy (considered to a genius) was twisting SJ words. Making what SJ had advised him on appear as if they were LP’s own words rather than SJ’s advice. Reading all the comments above were all my thoughts exactly.
So, if so many people are thinking the same way how on earth did this dumb ass from google ever think any one was stupid enough to believe what he spewing?
