Chinese burn paper iPads and iPhones to honor the dead

“China’s Xinhua news agency published a story Tuesday that shows just how deeply Apple’s iPads and iPhones have become a part of Chinese culture,” Doug Tsuruoka reports for Investor’s Business Daily.

“The official state media group says some Chinese are leaving paper replicas of Apple iPads and iPhones as offerings at the graves of deceased ancestors and friends, to coincide with the April 4 start of the Qingming Festival, or Tomb Sweeping Day,” Tsuruoka reports. “The centuries-old observance mourns the death of ancestors or loved ones.”

Tsuruoka reports, “It’s customary to tidy-up grave sites and burn offerings like gifts or food at this time, in the belief that they can be enjoyed by the dead in the afterlife. As in other cultures, the Chinese don’t necessarily burn real objects as offerings.”
