“There’s been a lot of buzz over Apple’s proposal for a future miniature SIM card. Competitors like Motorola, Research in Motion and Nokia are trying to stop it,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.
“The Financial Times stated in their recent report that ‘one person with knowledge of the committee’ said that the ‘Apple-backed nano-SIM could require a ‘drawer’ to protect it,'” Purcher reports. “Today, Apple has been granted their second patent regarding this proposed ‘drawer’ concept and it’s because the drawer or ejectable tray could accommodate not only a nano SIM but also an Integrated Circuit Card which is at the heart of Apple’s iWallet.”
Purcher reports, “A variant of Apple’s design could include a tray that accommodates both a Nano SIM card and an Integrated Circuit Card. So now you know a little more of the importance of the Nano SIM card story that Apple is proposing to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).”

“A spokesman for the company told IDG that it is unaware of any patents Apple holds for its nano-SIM proposal, and that “in light of this, Apple’s proposal for royalty-free licensing seems no more than an attempt to devalue the intellectual property of others.”
In light of this, Nokia’s spokesperson’s words seem to be no more than an attempt to show how ignorant they are of the IP surrounding Apple’s proposal. Seeing as how the company does nothing else well, their lack of awareness is par for the course. Keep dishing out your ignorance on the record, Nokia.

Is that where the “squirt” Microsoft touts the Zune is capable of, derived from? Betcha thought I was gonna end with ‘came from’! C’mon… Oops there I go again! Dang, and yet another euphemism strikes again…

Okay, to be fair, do we know that Apple is planning to submit this patent as part of a Nano SIM standard? It would seem to be a proprietary solution for Apple to use one tray for two things, when it includes its iWallet in the iPhone.
The proposal, as I see it, is purely for the adoption of the Nano SIM. Seeing as how Apple already have a proprietary drawer system for the SIM on the iPhone and iPad, while other makes require the phone back and battery to be removed, I don’t see how these patents would affect anything. Has anyone else noticed how the patent description says it can also accommodate a flash memory card as well…
It sounds like this would enable an iWallet to be put into ANY phone with a nano-sim/drawer, just by using the apple drawer.
Clever solution, though I think I’d prefer it if the drawer/IC card solution was also available to any payment service. So, if Google or Amazon or a bank wanted to make their own drawer, they could.
