Apple has submitted revised plan for the Apple Campus 2 project to the City of Cupertino in March 2012.
The replacement and rebuild proposal includes:
• Demolition of approximately 2.65 million square feet of existing office, research and development buildings;
• Construction of:
— An office, research and development building comprising approximately 2.8 million square feet;
— A 1,000 seat corporate auditorium;
— A corporate fitness center;
— A central plant;
— Research facilities comprising approximately 300,000 square feet located on the east side of Tantau Avenue; and
— Associated Parking.
• Development Allocation of up to 300,000 square feet of office space for subsequent development located within the project area.

This is a little creepy. The designs sound great, the corporate intent (office consolidation, green footprint) sounds great. On top of that, It’s Steve Jobs vision! Still, I’m a little worried: big monuments often precede big falls. I hope that the perception of humility accompanies Apple (the largest company by market cap) as it moves forward. The long knives will be out.
Did you look at the elevation? From ground level you can’t see it at all. It’s only “monument”al from the sky.
This is as humble a large building as you’d ever not see.
I agree with Ken. Go to the article and take a look at the elevation renders. It is not pretentious in the slightest. The average person at ground level would have no idea the building is as large as it is.

I read in the biography about Steve’s original idea of the Zen shaped building… He changed it because his son said it looked like male genitals.
