Ryan Block: iPad’s Retina display not just a spec, it’s seriously amazing; the best display I’ve ever seen

“So how IS the Retina Display on the new iPad? Amazing. Seriously amazing. I really love the Retina Display on the iPhone 4/4S, but this feels like a step forward even from that,” Ryan Block writes for gdgt. “Not because it’s a better display (which it may well be), but because the much larger scale of the screen makes it feel transformative to the experience of looking at a Retina Display and using an iPad.”

“The brightness, color, and richness were all great. I’m reasonably sure they brought the display closer to the glass like they did with the iPhone 4/4S Retina Display, but I’m not willing to commit that to the record,” Block writes. “The resolution is what brings it home though. Let me put it this way: when I pulled up a nice, high resolution photograph on the iPad 3rd-gen, I genuinely could not tell the difference between what I was seeing onscreen, and a nice, beautifully shot, well-printed, glossy photograph. It was seriously to that level.”

Block writes, “It’s the best display I’ve ever seen. Anywhere, period. And it makes a meaningful difference to the experience — it’s not just a spec.”

  1. The 4G is part of the update. I don’t know what it means, but I know my daughters T-Mobile android phone alternates between 4G/3G depending upon where she is.

  2. > it makes a meaningful difference to the experience — it’s not just a spec.

It’s never “just a spec” with Apple. It’s ALL about “the experience.” 🙂

The new iPad is marginally thicker (by 0.6 mm) and heavier than iPad 2, but the difference is so small (less than 10%) that most people will not notice. And the majority of customers are new to iPad, so they won’t really care. I’m guessing it was because the new display (and supporting upgrades) requires a slightly bigger battery to reach 10 hours.

  3. I’m not sure the masses realize just how awesome this is going to be. For instance, consider something like medical imaging. The prospect of supplementing those multi-million dollar scanners with a cheap, portable and wirelessly connected display that can show amazing detail is going to really be something. Want to consult or get a second opinion? Walk the data down the hall or across town on your iPad. That’s just one example. There are plenty of others out there just waiting to be exploited.
