“On February 21, 2011 a new MacBook Pro trademark was filed by Apple and the new oddity in their International Class 009 verbiage was that of “power converters.” At the time we pointed to a new fiber optic patent that would have made sense and low and behold, Apple introduced Thunderbolt on February 24, 2011. Well, Apple has done it again. They’ve filed for a new MacBook Pro trademark in Hong Kong, and yes, it has a new oddity,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple. “It reads as follows.”
Computers; notebook computers; computer hardware; computer software; computer operating system software; computer utility software; computer peripherals; computer batteries; remote controls; disk drives; power cords; power converters; video cameras; speakers for computers; microprocessors; computer memory boards; keyboards; computer docking stations; computer displays and monitors; touchscreens; computer mice; trackballs; trackpads; cables and connectors; flash memory drives; modems; personal digital assistants; video disc players; audio disc players; still cameras; digital cameras; semiconductors; integrated circuits; instructional manuals in electronic form packaged with the above; bags and cases adapted or shaped to contain portable and handheld computers, tablet computers, personal digital assistants, electronic organizers and electronic notepads.
Purcher reports, “If you’re thinking that the list noted above is simply standard legal boilerplate verbiage – then think again. Go back to their last MacBook Pro filing that we linked to earlier in our report. It was only filed a year ago and there wasn’t any mention of a touchscreen, tablet computer or electronic notepad for that matter.”

Oh good grief… this will get the rabid “IOS AND OSX R MERGINGGGGGGGGG!!!!11111” people far too energized.
There is no convergence – as the reviews of Windows 8 show, trying to combine a desktop UI with a touch-based UI results in an unusable kludge. iOS and OS X are not merging.
I mean, look at all the other stuff in that list – I mean “trackballs”? By this logic, apparently Apple will start re-introducing trackballs to their MacBook Pros.
No, the logic is that they’ve never had tablets and touchscreens in 009 for the macbook before. Secondly, get your head out of the sand. This is going to be a dynamic new category. iOS for when you fold it down as a tablet and OSX for when you need to work on a document for the office in Word. It’s not a combo OS it’s different OS’s depending on the mode you’ll be in.
It’s really pretty simple stuff to understand here.
Really? What you just described isn’t Apple. That’s just far too complicated to get the work done. Two OS’s in one single device to work? What for? Can’t you work in pages/word on the iPad.

On the other hand, Apple loves to gouge their customers. So you might be right, short term. I asked an Apple rep just last night why Apple doesn’t give iPad 3G customers to option for voice. The occassional call with a bluetooth headset would work for me. Answer: We want you to buy both (an iPhone and iPad) and said with such sarcasm I couldn’t believe his arrogance.
So short term fredman you might be right. If Apple can gouge, they will. But longer term, they’ll have to compete in the combination device movement that’s coming in 2013. I think it’s an iPad killer. Tablet to just read and surf and real PC to work on documents and more.
Since the trackpad on MacBook Pros have been made of glass for a while now, wouldn’t it make sense for them to be made iPhone like in functionality, i.e. become a retina display trackpad controller for the regular screen? Instead of a flat faceless surface, they would become a representation of the screen allowing for true multitouch functionality. Add haptics and you have a truly revolutionary computer.

I’ve thought about this a lot. There could be context sensitive functions like a numeric keypad or copy paste etc. (perhaps invoked with the command key).

The convergence MacBook/Pro to a tablet or iPadPro from factor is inevitable.
Form factors and components all make sense and if only the OSX one day soon gets the inner core of iOS then the product arrives. Who is to say Apple is not there yet? And not knowing how iOS was achieved – who is to say – its not already here.
Multi-Touch will only get better. Better touch also with possibly Senseg hap tics technology. And do not count out that – your mouse and track pad will no longer work via Bluetooth on such a a iPadPro?
