HandBrake 0.9.6 released

HandBrake 0.9.6 is now available for download.

HandBrake is a general-purpose, open-source, cross-platform, multithreaded video transcoder software application. HandBrake was originally developed by titer in 2003 as a general-purpose video transcoder to make ripping a film from a DVD to a data storage device easier. Since then, it has undergone many changes and revisions and become widely popular amongst film enthusiasts.

Along with the usual library updates, there are numerous improvements and bug fixes in HandBrake 0.9.6.

  1. Not very often that MDN is recommending software. I will agree that Handbrake is awesome. Now if somebody can just get Mac The Ripper for OS X – Lin and free again, it’ll be great.

  2. Oh for cryin’ out loud. How old is Handbrake? How many people use it every day? And the developer still won’t release version “1.0”? Cripes, we get on Google for “perpetual betas”.

What is the developer afraid of? Dude, it’s okay. “1.0” Not that scary.

    1. What exactly would version 1.0 do for you that 0.9.6 does not? Would 10.0 or 100.0 be better yet? I don’t understand your hangup with the version number. Handbrake works just fine for me, regardless of how they label the version.

      1. I don’t understand your hangup with the version number.

When the version number is ZERO, that means something very important. “0” means “beta”. It means the developer doesn’t have enough confidence in his product to take the “beta” label off.

IMHO, it shows a remarkable lack of maturity when a developer works on a piece of (successful!) software for this long, and still can’t find the courage to say: “Okay. This is a stable release. We’ve made it. 1.0.”

    1. I use DVD fab. Sadly it’s for pc though…
Works great and fast, only had 1-2 bad rips (problems ripping)
I keep the pc for games, and ripping bluray, all it’s good for.

For Mac.. Makemkv I think is what it’s called, meh… Takes forever.

Handbrake was to add blu ray support for Mac soon, haven’t updated it yet to see.

        1. Well I have used DVDFab before not the Mac version but haven’t paid yet. I just uninstall the 30 day trial and reinstall it. Magically another 30 days of free use. Wonder if it works the same for Mac Trial Version.

        2. going to have to give that a shot then.

It’s not the greatest DVD ripper to use, but it does work.
I have the “trial” version on pc also 😉
They want a fortune for it…
