Apple granted a foundational 3D user interface patent that might prove timely

“On February 28, 2012, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a granted patent from Apple that could be considered a foundational 3D interface patent,” Jack Purcher reports for Patently Apple.

“The patent describes a new ‘transition engine’ that will be added to OS X and iOS,” Purcher reports. “This new engine will allow a user to choose a tiny object on their new 3D desktop and zoom it out to see what it is or to read a filed PDF or view a photo or video and then allow it to zoom back to the position on their desktop with a cross fading effect in play.”

Purcher reports, “It could also transition using an animated effect. So instead of clicking on the object to open it, the user will have the ability to simply zoom an image or app in and out with ease.”

  1. I don’t care what anyone thinks on this because I absolutely love this idea. That transition concept is wild and I want it. Whether it’s with a right click I don’t know. But to zoom in and out of a document, email, app like weather of for stocks, it’s just damn cool.

    1. Sounds like Quicklook to me. I use that all the time, but it doesn’t work on all file types (e.g. InDesign docs). Of course there is nothing like this in iOS at this time. Must be something different about it to obtain a new patent with a 3D reference. Have to wait and see.

  2. By Apple being granted another patent, this will simply be another feature that Google won’t able to copy and put into Android.

Apple is slowly building a legal case against Android, and once all the pieces are in place, Google / Android is gonna get destroyed.

  3. When Apple lanunches a 3D UI it won’t look like their concept drawings. Bumper is a rip off of Apple’s concepts. But the real stuff that Apple has is going to knock our socks off. Apple is the king of the UI and they’ll pull this off with their typical class. They reivented the tablet, the smartphone and more. When they release a modern take on a 3D interface, they’ll do in a way that will stun us. And it won’t look like the cheapo Bumper stuff.
