Apple has released Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 to address issues with Rosetta.
Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 is now available for Mac OS X v10.6.8 systems to address a compatibility issue. Version 1.1 of this update removes the ImageIO security fixes released in Security Update 2012-001.
Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 is available via Software Update and also as a standalone installer.

It would seem to me, you cost yourself at least $100 and two days work, not the update. Take a bit of accountability.
Even after a horrible update, you could have been up an running in the time it takes to reboot your machine, while holding he option key.

Not everyone is a tech-head. Apple aims for the segment who are clueless about computing. Not clueless in a bad way but clueless as in they don’t want to learn the nuts and bolts of computing, backup, restoring from backup and all the rest of it.
Apple has $100 billion in the cash. Their beta testing should have been more extensive to catch obvious bugs in the first place.
The user is not at fault when Apple f***s up.
That’s why I tell all my customers and friends to never update right out of the gate. Wait 2 or 3 days.
AND
Most importantly, “If it is a production Mac that you cannot afford to have down, all the more reason to wait on updates. It was working fine up until then, another 72 hours won’t kill ya.”
I never understood people that jump on updates 2 seconds after they are released.
Oh, as to “Their beta testing should have been more extensive…”, all human programmers make mistakes and miss bugs.

Easy on the bold, crazy ones. If it wasn’t for the first jumpers, no one would know if it was safe to go into the water.
I really hate to agree with you (just for general purposes), but you do have a point. Many users, including the recent switchers, will simply install when notified, or have their computer set to install in the background. Then when something goes wrong they won’t have a clue.
Luckily, most of the problems with updates affect a small percentage of users, often due to third party conflicts that a non-power user might never experience. But it does seem like they are occurring more frequently, and with the growing base of Mac users it won’t get any better.
I believe owning a computer is a lot like owning a car.
I don’t know how to fix my car if it breaks; but I do know how to put gas in it and check the oil.
So if you know how to update your computer you should know how to backup your computer.
AND NO YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A TECH-HEAD TO BACK UP YOUR MAC. Apple has already taken the clueless people into account.
This is how easy it is:
1) Go to store, buy external hard drive (ask for help from employee if you don’t know which one to buy)
2) plug in hard drive into your mac
3) turn on time machine (its in system preferences)
4) In time machine preferences select the external hard drive to use for backups
5) forget about it!!! until you need it for some reason e.g. an update with a bug
If you use your computer for business and don’t backup you are just plane stupid or ignorant. If a bug doesn’t get you, then a failed hard drive or something else will!! If you don’t want to do your own IT work then hire someone who will.
Let’s not forget all external HD’s are not created equal. Some need to be formatted before using Time Machine or cloning the HD.
Yeah. But when you connect a high capacity external drive to your Mac, it asks you if you want to format it and use it as a backup disk.

Bingo, Bill! I use Time Machine at home and at work. I also regularly create a clone HDD using Carbon Copy Cloner, and store that clone offsite. I could recover from a bad OS update in minutes. Cloud backups are another option, although the bandwidth requirements could be prohibitive for home use.
Anyone who is using a computer in a mission critical role will follow a similar (or more rigorous) backup strategy. In addition, OS or other software upgrades should be performed on a test machine for a while to flush out bugs before updating the primary business machine.
Well, if you were stupid enough to jump on the first update without giving it a second thought, I don’t see why you shouldn’t stay consistent.
Damn Apple and their free, optional , frequent security updates!

And, while Carbon Copy Cloner is free, they do ask for a donation. I love that software!
I personally have found CCC to be the best backup software, invaluable for multiple restores. SD didn’t work so well for me, though I haven’t tried (or needed) it in a while.
So will all the conspiracy theorists from yesterday’s thread now please apologize?

I read about the problem with PowerPC yesterday. I ran system profiler to find all the PowerPC apps. I then threw them in the trash. Amoung the software:

I don’t know what APPLE HAS DONE to their software offerings. I can NOT get iPhoto to work worth a SHITE on my latest gen of mac mini. A TOTAL TOTAL TOTAL PIECE OF FSCKING SHITE. Come on Apple MFs. The last major update for apple tv was a fuck up too. I gotta take it down to the apple store to get it updated because I don’t have the stupid mini USB cable.
