“Apple retained its top rank in profitability and regained the top spot in mobile phone revenues,” Horace Dediu reports for Asymco.
“Apple reached 75% of profit share, nearly 40% of revenue share and 9% of units share,” Dediu reports. “Apple and Samsung combined for about 91% of profits with RIM third at 3.7%, HTC fourth at 3.0% and Nokia last at 1.8% of a $15 billion total for the quarter.”
Dediu reports, “In terms of revenues, Apple had 39% to Samsung’s 25%. Third was Nokia with 12.6% and fourth RIM at 8%. HTC only managed 5.5%, Motorola 4%, LG 3.3% and Sony Ericsson 2.7%.”

MacDailyNews Take: To the innovator go the spoils.

bloodbath?
And yet with all that money innovation seems to have stopped with the warmed over 4S.
Warmed over?
You’ve quite clearly never used an iPhone 4S.
BLN has the 4. It looks like the 4S. He has no need for Siri and thinks the 4S’s other improvements are unimpressive. And he may not be eligible to upgrade to 4S at this time.
I’m sure that many reasonable people think as he does, but they don’t nag, harp, drone, badger, carp, whinge, and kvetch as splendidly as he does.
Indeed, 37 warmed over iPhone 4Ses sold in the last quarter. Quite a stupendous failure. How will Apple ever recover?
Can you forgive the rest of us for doubting you, BLN?
Forgot the “M” as in 37M iPhone 4Ses sold last quarter.
You’re doing a really poor job of imitating our old friend Zoontang®
I’m glad it’s only “warmed over”.
So I can wait for the iPhone 5 and get that, provided that the battery in the 3GS lasts that long.
‘Stockboy’, you’re no better calling yourself BLN.
Go away.
If what you say about the 4S is true, then I can’t wait for iPhone 5 and then sales might really take off. No wonder rival smartphone vendors are rumored to be holding off introducing their new smartphones this quarter. They’re waiting for the warmed over 4S sales to slow down.
So, so predictable (‘;’)
Logs on with sub-juvenile sig., makes enthusiastic noises whilst slowly exposing truly moronic character with a series of xenophobic, racist, misogynist, humourless, spiteful, intolerant and naive posts. Not content with these, he obsessively flogs dead horse meat. That’s a whole heap of doodoo.
You’re welcome.
Don’t hold back, tell us how you *really* feel about BLN…
…stupid, foolish, senseless, brainless, mindless, idiotic, insane, lunatic, asinine, ridiculous, ludicrous, absurd, preposterous, silly, inane, witless, half-baked, empty-headed, unintelligent, slow-witted, weak-minded, crazy, dumb, brain-dead, cretinous, imbecilic, doltish, thick, thickheaded, birdbrained, pea-brained, pinheaded, dopey, dim, dimwitted, halfwitted, dippy, fat-headed, blockheaded, boneheaded, lamebrained, chuckleheaded, dunderheaded, muttonheaded; daft, dumb-ass, chowderheaded.
Ah….BLN. Deflowering unsuspecting MDN virgins again.
I do get a laugh out of BLN.
Most of us don’t.
I miss ZuneTang®.
I knew ZuneTang®.
And you Mr. Scrotum are NO ZuneTang®! 😉
innovation seems to have stopped with the warmed over 4S
Pay no attention folks. Today the scrotum is suffering from menopausal hot flashes and cannot be responsible for her actions. 😎
The headline says it all… 75% of the available profit from the ENTIRE mobile phone industry. That is remarkable.
That means the collective “competition” made 25% of the available profit from 91% market share. I just did some quick math… On average. Apple made about 30 times the profit per iPhone compared to each unit sold by the competition.
Many low-end feature phones are being sold. And, increasingly, many of the so-called “smartphones” are just a revamped version of the old feature phones with a larger touch display and Android grafted onto them. Those are low margin commodity items.
These profit comparisons are counterproductive in some ways because they make Apple look greedy. People see that and assume that Apple’s prices must be way too high. The interesting thing is, other vendors are struggling to attempt to provide a comparable product at a comparable price. Catching up is a dream for them. Surpassing Apple would be a miracle.
But… but… but Android is winning and Apple is doomed.
I think it’s not going to be easy to commoditize Apple’s devices with cheap substitutes, but there are financial geniuses who definitely think otherwise and that’s why Apple’s P/E continues to shrink at a steady rate.
All done without charging $5 for a ringtone!
Meanwhile Microsoft has to pay Nokia $250M to sell only 1M Windows phones
SHHH! That CEO guy at you-know-who might hear you!
So here you are. You’re a OtherPhone manufacturer. You sell more OtherPhones than Apple sells iPhone. But dammit! Apple makes more money than you in the phone market! What the frack is market share good for if you’re not raking in the bucks?! So you’re all sad and mopey and wish you knew how to innovate. Darn. This is the story of Samesung.
See! I told you Samesung: You are soooo screwed. I like it. 😎
