      1. To stop or minimize the “updating open pages”: Via Safari Menu>Empty cache and Safari reset>remove all Web Page Preview images (unless you like using top sites). Quit Safari. Then open the Finder and navigate to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.safari/ Cmd i for both cache.db and WebPage Preview folder (if you don’t want to use Top Sites). Click on “lock”. Restart Safari.

No more unnecessary writes to the cache, or accumulation of inane web page previews.

    1. Hmm I have a Mac Pro 2008 with 2x4GB and 6×512 MB. The 2X512MB DIMMS on the same board as the 4GB DIMMS are now no longer recognised. Not a big deal but I think it is from the upgrade and I didn’t see a warning. Just so you know.

    1. No kidding…bringing back Save As as an option would be the single biggest thing..at least for me…I simply will not ever use “versioning” which is annoying at the very least. Duplication wouldn’t be that much of an issue..just another way except that Preview and TextEdit crash all the fsking time…Completely stupid step that assume all workflow is accomplished inside the Apple bubble. It isn’t.

      1. I hate versioning and wish Apple would stop dumbing down the OS for the PeeCee switcher crowd. As to the snarky reply about the floppy drive, I just consider the Fanboi source.

      2. The loss of Save As may not affect everyone. But it is sure making a difference among my clients. Realtors absolutely hate the loss of Save As. Imagine having to sort through different versions of long contracts trying to find the correct version for a specific client.

As it stands right now, among my clients – 300+ there is a total boycott of Lion. Many are already making plans to return to Windows if Apple doesn’t provide a satisfactory fix. Which is a shame because Lion does have some nice features.

        1. re the SAVE AS “missing” in Lion … Is having to do the following not quick enough or elegant enough?
(Have the file open on screen)…
          FILE–>DUPLICATE
When new file appears on screen with COPY at end of file name, choose
          FILE–>SAVE…
Then re-name the file (and choose destination).
Perhaps a keyboard shortcut for the DUPLICATE command would be handy. The Cmd+S keyboard shortcut will work as a “SAVE AS…” but only after the file has been Duplicated.

        2. Some people can’t learn, hence the “return” to windows comments.

Lion rocks, after the wifi issues was fixed, which wasnt really lion.. All is well.

Except the “natural” scrolling bs apple did. At least you can fix that.

  1. Likely one of the few, but I still use iCab quite a bit. I particularly like the iOS version. But I’ve used the Mac version on and off for some years. My default on the Mac is Safari until it destroys everything. Then I have to restart to fix what’s broke. My “default” on iOS (even though I have to manually open it – Stop that, Apple!) is iCab.

  2. I finally gave up on Safari – too slow, too buggy, too much of a memory hog. I switched after waiting a long time to see if Safari got better, and now I’m very happy with Chrome. Sorry I waited so long now 🙂

  3. Safari never a problem and never slow. No crashes or anything. Are you guys running Safari on Windoz? Because I certainly can’t imagine why you would even want to use chrome. You must like your data to get mined by google right?

  4. That is an effing huge update. Apple needs to apply it’s less is more mantra to the size of software. OS X and Apple apps have exploded in size way out of proportion to features and usefulness.

  5. What no fix for address book / calendar / mail crashes? I don’t use safari anymore – I got tired of waiting 4 minutes for the spinning ball to stop. Might be time for a fresh instal.

  6. Never had an issue NOT once with Safari – use it every day.

And I refuse to install any other f____ browser on my machine because its a MAC. So enjoy your FireF___ , Microsoft funded sloth-ware. Personally – well I’ll stop at that.

  7. Not sure this applies to any of you with a slow Safari problem, but when I deleted Adobe Flash from her iMac, Safari magically more than doubled in speed. Other programs sped up as well. I can’t believe how many resources are overtaxed by Adobe.

  8. 10.7.3 as a download from the App Store is now 4.07 GB. Tend to stick with Safari, though it needs more work. Firefox 9 and 10 are substantially faster than previous releases. Chrome releases appear progressively slower on launch.

  9. Be warned…there does appear to be an issue with the 10.7.3 update if: 1) You use the automated Software Update; and 2) Have a Mac notebook computer. Go to the Apple Discussions, then to the Mac 10.7 forum and you’ll find the long thread. It’s remarkably consistent–which leads to the conclusion that there is a specific bug with the Software Update version and/or process.

If it were me, I would either hold off the update; or else do it the traditional, geeky way. Download the 10.7.3 Combo Update (1.2 gigs!). Boot into your repair/restore partition and do a disk utility repair and then also repair permissions. Then, boot back into your normal startup volume and install the update without using any other software.

  10. WARNING: DO NOT RUN THIS UPDATE IF YOU NEED ROSETTA!!!

The Security Update 2012-001 caused every legacy app I tested to crash. I had to do a complete restore of the system and data using Time Machine.

There were several long threads on Apple Discussions from folks with the same problem caused by this update. It appears Apple has a real mess on their hands.

      1. You are right, it was just the only spot I could find to post a warning regarding the Security Update 2012-001 that I believe was made available the same day.

I unfortunately have to rely on a legacy program in my business and this major screw-up caused me to lose almost an entire day of work. I am NOT a happy camper.

There is NO excuse for posting a security update for Snow Leopard and not checking for its effect on Rosetta apps. There is a good reason many of us have not moved to Lion. We are stuck in the den of the Snow Leopard for the time being.
