New Yorker writer Susan Orlean threatened divorce to convert her husband to Mac

“Talking on stage about her love of technology and gadgets, New Yorker writer Susan Orlean rhapsodized her iPad, and told how she converted her husband to Apple technology,” Leander Kahney reports for Cult of Mac.

“Orlean said there are four iPads in her household: one each for her and her husband; one for her son and one for their nanny,” Kahney reports. “‘We got one for our nanny as a Christmas present,’ she said. ‘I’ve never seen such joy on someone’s face.'”

Kahney reports, “She also told how she converted her husband — described as a “Windows guy” — to Apple technology. ‘Do you want to stay married?’ she joked, which got a good response from the Macworld crowd.”

      1. OT politics:
2012 will vote you out of office forever.

With WHO exactly? Some surprise candidate from stage right? Not any of the current zoo. 🙄

Not that I will enjoy voting for Obama BTW. Sheesh, the leadership gap continues…

    1. *raises hand*

I will sheepishly admit that I bought a Winblows box after I owned my first Mac.

I bought a Bondi-blue G3 tower in 1999, with a big-ass matching-color CRT monitor. I later replaced the CRT with the matching LCD and it currently resides in my guest room for checking e-mail and such.

Anyway, in 2006 I realized that the lowly G3 wouldn’t do some of the things I wanted (games…), so I bought a Sony Vaio running Windows XP. In fact, I have 2 of the same model. Long story. Nevermind.

However, since that time, to the arsenal I have added a 1999 Powermac G3 lappy (still works), 2 Macbooks (piece of sh*t failures; both died from faulty capacitors. Apple *really* needs to get their component sh*t together), 3 iPhones, 1 iPad, and a 2011 21″ iMac, which is simply gorgeous.

So, while not a ‘switcher’, I have flirted with the ‘Dark Side’ and it continuously makes me appreciate how much Apple is concerned about ‘the details that you can’t see…’

All I can say is: Thank you, Steve.

    1. Bullshit! I have both Macs and PC’s, and I am perfectly happy with both of them. Windows 7 is an excellent OS that is a 100x more customizable than Lion, but Lion is just elegant and easy to use. I like both for different reasons and will be giving neither of them up any time soon. I also love my iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone. I hate Android……

      1. Proud to report we’ve never owned a PC and have had Macs since ’89…but my wife and I have had to slog through using Windohs at various jobs for too many years. Thank God we don’t have to deal with ‘dohs any longer!

      2. If by customizable, you mean you can change the wallpaper, then you’re right.

If you mean you can do things several different ways on your PC, you don’t know your Macs very well.

I use my PC the same way I use my Macs.

      3. Mmmm… OS X is actually far more customizable than NT5 (windows XP-7), just not for script kiddies. Windows cater to tinkerers who don’t really know much. OS X is much easier to do basic configuration but to really customize requires (really) knowing what you are doing. There are a few add ons that make it easier for “tweeners” to customize

  1. “She also told how she converted her husband — described as a “Windows guy””

Setting aside humor, a vast number of Windows users are TRAPPED. ‘Doze remains the default OS in business (which explains a lot about the ongoing failure of business around the world). Rather than abuse and taunting, many Windows users instead deserve PITY. 😥

  2. Ha! When my wife and I first started dating she had a crappy HP that was on it’s last legs. Kinda odd that she had such a POS machine at home when she’s in advertising. Anyway, it died on her and she was seriously thinking about just replacing it with another HP because her mom is a Windoze fanatic.

We’d only been dating for two months but I told her I’d break up with her if she bought a PC. A few days later we ended up at the Apple Store and I carried a 20″ iMac out to her car.

I also got her to ditch her RAZR for an iPhone 3G when her contract was up.

I just couldn’t fathom dating someone who uses a PC, even more so that dating a Republican. She leans that way but somehow it’s easier to deal with than her using Windoze.

    1. According to your own admission you obviously did “fathom” dating PC owner. Not quite a man of principles and conviction, eh?
