Apple to ship ‘iPad 3’ in March, ‘iPad 4’ in October, say Taiwan component makers

“Apple will ship the so-called ‘iPad 3’ with a full HD display in March and then ‘iPad 4’ – named so by its component suppliers – with killer applications in October, according to industry sources in Taiwan,” Monica Chen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“The iPad 3 will come with a QXGA (1,536×2,048 pixels) display and longer battery life although its other hardware specifications may not be so amazing as expected, said the sources,” Chen and Shen report. “But Apple will take the advantage of the iPad 3 launch to slash the price of its iPad 2 to US$399, the sources claimed.”

Chen and Shen report, “A true battle for market share will arrive in the second half of the year when Apple ships its iPad 4 in October… The 9.7-inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android-, Wintel- or WoA (Windows on ARM)-based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter, said the sources.”

So apple will make junk to “compete” with low end crap?

  2. This is totally how Apple has proven over the years to function. Release two upgrades of the same product within one year. That is standard operating procedure for Apple.

So, is operating scared and letting competitors determine their next move.

Two things they often do. (insert sarcasm here)

  3. I bet this is true.

Just like when I purchased my iPad2 and the Best Buy employee wanted me to participate in their Buy Back Program becuase they knew that the iPad3 was due to be released in Dec 2011.

    1. That buy back is such a scam…
I sold my iPad 1 for almost twice what bestbuy would have paid me.

And don’t forget, you have to pay THEM up front to get the money back later.

None of those buy back programs are wise, I know a few other stores offer similar as well, all scams really.

  4. I’m waiting for the iPad 3 so I can ditch my original iPad which is getting long in the tooth and crashes constantly due to low memory after upgrading the software to iOS 5. It’s getting to the stage where it irritates the hell out of me. Also the battery won’t hold its charge for more than 4-5 hours of light use with Wi-Fi on. I have to keep recharging it twice a day.

    1. I’m surprised you’re having these problems with iPad 1. Mine still keeps decent charge and Safari crashes only occasionally. As usually happens with a newer OS the processor runs a little slower than with iOS 4. Looking forward to the iPad 3. Also people leave us not forget a new 7.85″ iPad will also be squeezed into the busy iPad product schedule this year according to Digitimes. And no website would lie about a thing like that…

    2. Sadly BLN I have come to doubt almost anything you say.

As for Apple’s battery quality (and this is only anecdotal) in my experience it is the best I have ever come across. For example; I had an original iPhone 3G (4 years old) that is still in service and has been used virtually every day and still holds ~60-80% of what it did originally.
(however I treated the battery properly, you can prematurely age any Lithium battery by treating it badly)

  5. As usual, just wall street stock broker posturing. “Hey, buy stock in our company because Apple is releasing 2 iPads this year which mean’s well sell lots of parts and make lots of investments, that means we are a good investment”.

The only TRUTH that exists about Apple when it comes to wall street is that nobody on wall street “gets” Apple. If the dumb-ace stock brokers that predict all the new products that Apple will be making just read the Steve Jobs Book, they would learn a couple of things.
    1) Steve ingrained what he believed into Apple before he died. It will be a decade or more before anyone at the company tries to Challenge the way Steve thought.
    2) Simplicity. Only make a few products, but make them the best you can
    3) Customer Loyalty. Customers will love you because you make great products, offer great service and support, and because you don’t try to rape them by making their new product obsolete too soon (well, at least not more than once per year).

    1. You can say “ass”, it’s no longer considered censor-worthy and they say it all the time on prime time TV.

It cracks me up that movie channels will censor “God damn!” though (plain old “damn” is just fine).

        1. yeah cause it’s fine to show a child porn, just cause its on prime time tv…

There was a poll/study a few years back, like 94% of the us regards themselves as religious to some point.

I see you point out Christians there, but I dare you to say something derogatory about Mohammad to a Muslim. You know, the ones issuing death threats to newspapers for printing cartoons with Mohammad.
Oh that’s right, they bombed an embassy over the cartoons….

        2. You might be surprised to learn that a great many firmer Muslims I know consider themselves atheists now and that Mohd and Christ are just myths made up to control people who need pretend guardians to protect them. lest we forget, Bush and Blaire are both avowed Christians who both illegally bombed the crap out of entire countries because they could. They didn’t even need to be insulted first!!

Look back 20 years and the ‘low end crap’ was the IBM/DOS commodity PC business. The affordability and low cost access to the Wintel world created an attractive and rapidly growing market for hardware and software developers. Yes, Apple had an elegant, capable and by most definitions profoundly SUPERIOR OS, but it missed that initial buy-in from the public that, unfortunately, was price sensitive.

Fast forward to the mid 90’s, Apple decides to sell cheaper models(Performas) to compete on price, and then a final, futile attempt at licensing MacOS.

Although iOS/android is a bit different, it is still a relatively untapped market on a worldwide scale. There is an opportunity for cheap Android devices to grow their market share into a competitive advantage. I love my iPad and my new 4S, but I was the only one with an iPhone during the holidays with my family. They all had less expensive, but in their minds just as capable, app-friendly Androids. When I asked them why they went with Android, they said it was cheaper than the iPhone and they thought it was a better supported platform, mainly because of the sheer quantity of available devices supporting it.

Look, most of Joe Public are not tech-informed as the readers of this site. In these consumer’s minds, and we’re talking LOTS, this is playing out like the Mac v Windows scenario of the 90’s.

    Thoughts?

    1. The difference is that Apple now has the strongest operations, thanks to Tim Cook. Apple is the low cost producer.

Other’s may do what they want, a la Amazon, but will do so with very narrow margins. While there is something to be said for the razor vs. razor blade model, it is telling that Barnes & Noble is discussing spinning off the nook business.

Amazon killed the non Apple tablet market.

True about the public, but many think that there is a big difference between now and 1998.

iPod 70% of world sales of mp3 players…. still
iPhone LARGE percent of smart phone sales…. still even 3Gs model.
iPad +70% of world sales of tablets…..

Macs selling more and more as people buy other Apple items and decide to go Apple computer too.

Go into any Apple store…. its always crowded.. Now go into a Microsoft store…

Apple has such a strong brand name now that people want it just because… and 99% of people going Mac never go back. Its a one way street.

Maybe after Windows 8 ships……….er……….. never mind.

      Just a thought,

    3. Two issues at work here:

      1) The free iPhone 3gs is AT&T only. The $99 reduced price iPhone 4 is available only on AT&T and Verizon. So iPhones for free or $99 are limited by carrier. (Granted, ATT & VZW are the 2 biggest carriers.) Sprint will likely be added to the list say in two years (about when your friends and family are coming off contracts for Androids). Your price conscious friends & family will then have reason to consider iPhones. T-Mobile will be the wild card, if they exist much longer.

      2) The tablet market is less than 2 years old, and is still settling down. The iPad is successful at the $500+ niche. I believe the Amazon Fire will succeed in the $200 niche, because of the Amazon ecosystem behind it. You see no-name Android tablets below $200 but are they turning a profit? There have been fire sales (HP Touchpad) in that price range, but again no profits. The other tablets (Android, HP WebOS, RIM) tried to compete in the Apple dominated $500+ space and have been clobbered. Maybe Samsung is having some success, time will tell on them. I wouldn’t rule out Apple introducing the iPad 3, and then continuing to offer the iPad 2 for a reduced price. That will definitely stir up the market vis-à-vis pricing between $200 and $500. Remember too that the iPad is available at Walmart and Target, not just Best Buy and other big electronics stores. That’s putting it in the public’s face. Let’s see if Apple adds more mainstream stores, office superstores, wholesale clubs, Radio Shack (don’t knock them, they’re big in small towns), etc. How many stores carry the other tablets, and what kind of job do they do in selling them? In summary, I’d give tablets a couple more years to mature, and then see what the market looks like.

In the mean time, Apple is doing just fine. They are pretty much selling all the iPhones and iPads they can make.

    1. don’t forget the iPhone 5 next month, and the 6 along side the iPad 3.

And the iPhone 7 should be here by September. Just in time for the christmas launch of the iPhone 8, the best iPhone of the year!

At least that’s what digitimes told me.
