RUMOR: Apple switching from AMD to NVIDIA for next-gen MacBook Pro discrete graphics chips

SemiAccurate reports that Apple will be transitioning back to NVIDIA from AMD as its graphics chip supplier for the next-generation MacBook Pro models offering discrete graphics,” Eric Slivka reports for MacRumors.. “The move comes after Apple just recently completed a multi-year effort to switch its entire Mac lineup from NVIDIA to AMD.”

“With Intel’s integrated graphics improving significantly over the past year, Apple has finally been able to transition its small notebooks to all-Intel solutions, while its larger notebooks continue to offer switchable graphics using the integrated Intel and discrete AMD options,” Slivka reports. “It now appears, however, that Apple will be moving back to NVIDIA for those discrete options.”

Slivka reports, “The report from SemiAccurate does not address Apple’s GPU plans for its desktop models, which also currently utilize AMD for their discrete graphics.”

  1. NOOOOoooooooo!!!!
Please don’t do this Apple you freaking losers!

There are nasty bugs in Apple’s NVIDIA GeForce drivers that make them unusable on any system that also has a third-party video driver installed. Third-party video drivers are typically found in software products that provide a virtual screen, including Air Display (for iOS, or for Mac), ScreenRecycler, DisplayLink, DisplayPad, and any of a number of others.

Apple broke support for these virtual drivers in Lion. Fortunately it only affected people with 2008 or 2009 GeForce-based video adapters. Now if this rumor is true, Apple wants to make it even worse by adopting GeForce across the board? Losers.

    APPLE, FIX YOUR BUGS!

  2. This is no rumor.

Apple was embarrassed by AMD earlier this year in a very public way, when it was ruled by the ITC Apple’s graphic chips violated two of S3’s ( HTC ) patents.

AMD has claimed they are the owners of the graphic technology, but after the panel heard summary arguments from AMD, they ruled AMDs evidence wasn’t compelling enough to intervene on Apple’s behalf. Smackdown!

Now Apple is going to punish AMD, for hanging them out to dry.

It was rulled that some Mac models were found to be in violation (probably Mac Books) and none of Apple’s mobile devices were encroaching on S3s tech.

  3. I can tell you all with 100% certainty, that Apple is about to make revolutionary changes to it’s MacBook pro line.

I have history as an indicator for the future:

I bought a Performa, and the 3G came out shortly after.

I bought a Yikes! model G4, and within weeks, they all had AGP graphics.

I bought a Quicksilver G4, and damn near immediately, the G5 came out.

I bought a G4 PowerBook, and within a couple months, they switched to Intel.

I will be receiving a bonus from work, within a month, and I have decided to buy a MacBook Pro.

You should probably all hold off on your purchases!!!
