RUMOR: iOS 5.0.2 due next week, solves iPhone 4s battery issue; iOS 5.1 to make Siri even smarter

“According to German Apple blog Macerkopf, an Apple engineer hard at work in the iOS division tells them that Apple has finally licked the battery problems, and will release the fix [iOS 5.0.2] no later than the end of next week, bringing all iPhone 4Ses up to a standard 40 hours of standby and 10 hours of use,” John Brownlee reports for Cult of Mac.

“More exciting, though, is what Apple has in store for iOS 5.1,” Brownlee reports.

Siri will apparently be getting some incredible new functionality, including support for these commands:

• Take a picture.
• Make a video.
• Switch on/off WiFi
• Switch on/off BlueTooth

  1. Siri needs a backup, offline mode for onboard functions (reminders, timer, play music, etc), for when the network isn’t available or it’s in Airplane Mode. At the very least fall back to Voice Control rather than declining all voice commands.

  2. • Switch on/off WiFi
    • Switch on/off BlueTooth

I used to jailbreak for sbsettings (and other stuff) I STILL miss sbsettings for the ease of access to the iPhones settings. If Siri can turn this on/off… Sbsettings may be dead for me now.

iOS 4 removed all but a few jailbreak reasons, iOS 5 removed all but 1. 5.1 will pretty much remove any reason.

    Thanks apple!

  3. I do not have battery problems with my 4S. But this is my third iPhone (2G,3Gs and 4S) and they all have awful phone quality. I just don’t understand how they can make a phone that does most things well but has such terrible phone quality? I mean I had a Samsung slider 5 years ago that had great voice quality. I’m very disappointed that Apple can’t do better. Siri is nice when it works. But I’d give that up for a good phone.

    1. Methinks you doth protest too much!!

Ok, bad context for that quote, but the bottom line here is that if you really think the phone quality is “AWFUL”, then why in the world would you be on your 3rd different model?? Perhaps you are really intending to say that it’s not “perfect”… or perhaps you’re just a trolling android trying to get others to believe your drivel by saying you’re on your 3rd phone. In any case, I can attest that my 4S sound quality is excellent… and I have listed to my wife talking to me from her 4S without problems.

      1. i have had bad call quality with my iPhone… and my old BB, and my old Motorola… Both Verizon and AT&T.

oddly, I’m told I sound better sometimes when I’m on my Jabra Drive than when using the actual iPhone.

      2. Hey asshole. Who the fuck do you think you are? Eh? I’m simply stating my experience with iPhones. I’ve owned Apple stuff since the early 80’s so don’t come on with that troll shit to impress the 10 year old fanboys. I own iPhones because I get a tremendous deal through a major studio. I need the computing and video aspect of the iPhone so I put up with the call quality. I own and use 2 iPhone 4S’s. They are invaluable in my business and personal life. But the voice quality of calls is lacking. It’s just a fact. And I’m certainly not the only person to have this experience. I love my iPhones. They just need to function better when I make calls. I’m not sure why you have trouble comprehending that? Or why you try to label someone you don’t know as a troll? Or why you feel the need to defend a company when that company is criticized? They don’t know you. They don’t give a good shit if you defend them. Ok? Prick.

    2. While I make or take few calls, I’ve yet to notice any issues with call or speech quality on either my iP4 or the iP3 that preceded it. The Nokia N95 that came before them, on the other hand, was shockingly bad, buzzy, fuzzy and muffled.
Honestly, from my experience, there is no issue with the iPhone’s call quality. But there again, I’m on O2 in the UK; it’s entirely possible all your problems may lie with your network. Ever thought of that?

    1. that would require siri to know the teams/sports you WANT the scores from. Maybe something you would have to input somewhere for Siri to watch.

Or let Siri have access to Apps like ESPN where you do have “my Teams” etc. that would be nice.

    1. So do I, thats why I LOVE SBSettings, but you have to jailbreak to use it.. And outside SBSettings I have no reason to jailbreak anymore.

I saw this yesterday though, I almost did it.
      http://www.macworld.com/article/163639/2011/11/get_quick_access_to_ios_settings_with_iconsettings.html

Basically makes a little Icon for Bluetooth (or whatever) you press it and it takes you directly to the bluetooth settings menu. A Little better than the setting>general> bluetooth>on/off. and repeat to turn back on/off later.

I just hope they enable Siri to do more than just WiFi/Bluetooth though. Airplane Mode would be very nice also.

  4. as far as the battery issue goes, I went from the 3gs too the 4s about 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love the upgraded features. I use my phone quite a lot on a daily basis for work(email, phone & texts), I’m having to charge my new phone twixw a day! Very frustrating. I’ve been reading the comments and recommendations on MDN. I’ve turned off several location based tags , did a reset all settings and upgraded the software to the 5.01 and still no change. Two nights ago I left the phone on the charger all night long and the following day , I went the whole day on that one charge. I’m sure others have discovered this , but I thought I would share my experience. I love reading MDN and the comments daily.

  5. typo, meant twice a day. Also , I’m looking forward to the software update 5.02 next week. In my family , we have three 4s’s , one 4 and multiple macs n I pods. We are very pro Apple and love the OS ! Btw, my son who has the 4 gets double the battery life as our 4s’s !

  6. Still waiting for 5.02…. Each battery has a finite amount of charge – recharge cycles, I’m blasting through these at a pretty good clip, will Apple help me out on the cost of the replacement?
