wow. a 55mb update. Downloading it over wifi here 🙂 1 minute remaining! 🙂
Nice to see a small update for a change, and we’ll see how the wifi download and install goes. Here’s hoping for the usual ‘just works’ experience.
Is this an automatic notification?
Found it – Settings>General>Software Update. Seems much easier rather than being tethered to iTunes.
… small? that’s 40 floppies!!!
“Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad.”
They mean “Brings Multitasking Gestures Back.” I have not yet upgraded my original iPad to iOS 5 yet mainly because I didn’t want to lose those gestures. Crazy that Apple would take them away, then 0.1 version later bring them back. Now if they would just bring back Safari’s multiple windows.
I for one don’t like the tabbed browsing on iPad. I too wish that Apple would give me the option to select tabbed browsing or multiple windows browsing.
Nevermind Tabbed browsing….I really wish they would give me the old style iTunes player buttons back on my iPad. They changed it to some all white metallic type of look. To add insult to injury they even added an orange marker on the play-progress bar…..kind of like an old radio tuning marker……just horrible.
Somebody please tell me its an option that can be changed?
Does Apple really expect us to accept such a lousy piece of software? And why are there no alternatives in the App Store? I feel like a prisoner.
I have been using iCab forever on my iPad primarily because of the tabbed browsing, but also because of other features it has (lots) that Safari doesn’t. I wish we would be allowed to select a our own default browser.
The loss of the playlists as they look in iTunes is my biggest complaint. The first time I opened the Music Player after the upgrade, I thought I had opened the Photos app by mistake because all of the album art. I DESPISE the new look. I could care less about album art but I have to suffer through it to listen to my music.
My second big complaint is the lack of a sorting feature for the player and the fact that any sorting done in the iTunes library does not carry over to the player. I have a playlist of all newly added songs with the most recently added at the top. Works fine in iTunes but after syncing to iPad the list is in random order.
This is the worst iPod UI design EVER.
Same here. iTunes today (on iOS), sucks !
BTW , if you tap on the little thumbnail next to the orange playing “thing”, it will be enlarged on a black background and show you only the cover. This is better than the white thing, but takes a lot of resources, I think, because it made my iPad (first generation) hang a couple to times.
Really? You are complaining about tabbed browsing???? Tabbed browsing just provides quicker transition to the other pages. Old way, you had to click down to the pages icon, then slide the pages over till you got to the one you wanted, then tap the screen, then it animated back up. Tabbed browsing – you touch the tab and it opens. Also,it is a misnomer to call it multiple windows since you can only have one window open at a time. Do you want them to bring back Mulitfinder too?
I’m with you, homer! Tabs rock!
I like it also.
Old way… Slower
Agreed, tabbed browsing is a superior experience
Not complaining about tabs, complaining about lack of CHOICE. I liked the visual preview that I had on the iPad, and would like the option to have it back.
You are mistaken. The gestures to which the update refers were not a part of iOS prior to 5, and were initially only available on iPad2.
That’s funny. I’ve been using those gestures for quite a while now on my iPad 1. There’s even an option in my General Setting called “Multitasking Gestures” (looking at it right now) that is no longer on my wife’s iPad after updating to 5.0. Perhaps you are thinking of something else.
No he’s right, Apple did promote new multi-touch gestures for iOS 5 so there is definitely something new. Odd though…
They were added in the Develop Previews of iOS5 and taken away for the public release – and now added back in.
I was using some of the gestures on iPad 1 under iOS 4. I think they were unlockable via DevTools?
I just got my number ported from my 3GS to my new 4S, so I won’t have a chance to see if it fixes the horrendous battery drain on the old phone–browsing in Safari on 3G network it would drain about 1% per minute. Yes, it’s a 2+ year old battery, but it simply didn’t drain that quickly under iOS 4.x
Let’s hope it fixes Safari – my iPad has been crashing and freezing ever since the update. Oh and it keeps turning off syncing of pages docs on my iPhone and wireless sync doesn’t work.
Ouch..
My iPad 2 has been rock solid with the update.
Bound to be issues though, apple can’t test every possible configuration of apps and settings.
My first wireless iOS upgrade. Awesome!
Software update on my 4S says the software is up to date with 5.0. This would be my first update without tethering to a computer. But I suspect it hasn’t been pushed out yet.
I had to turn off wifi and check for the update. Then reconnect to wifi to update.
That’s required? I’ll try it, but please tell me that is not Apple’s official way. It has to be a glitch of some sort.
It is not required. The update simply wasn’t pushed out to all parts of the world at the same time. At the time you wrote this, it wasn’t yet available to me in the US. I checked back a little while later, and there it was.
No glitches. No official policy.
Hrm at 5.0 says I’m up to date. 🙁
I had the same problem. If I selected “Download and update”, it would then say “This version of the iPhone software (5.0) is the current version.”
So I selected “Download only”.
After that was done, I clicked “Update” and it went fine from there.
I saved screen shots of this stuff, because I repeated my first effort (trying to Download AND update) twice.
I just checked, shows 5.0.1 is available.
44.6mb though.. And says I need to connect to wifi to download.
685 MB here …
Thanks Steve!
Settings->General->software updates
No iTunes needed!
I’m downloading while it’s plugged into my iTunes. From iPhone 4S OS 5.0 to 5.0.1 and it says the file size is 813mb.
Before the update I had 4 bars for signal strength. Now…. It says No Service 🙁
Is there an option where I can choose to download the mega file? I wanna make sure I’m not missing anything. hehe 😉
For all you getting a large file to download.. You are doing it the old way.
As has been pointed out above, settings > general > software update. ON THE iPHONE. Not your pc/Mac.
Don’t hook your iPhone up to anything.
I could be wrong, but I think that’s what some of you are doing.
Yes, it’s a nicely manageable file over wifi direct to the iPhone. That being said, it is taking quite a while….
Only took a minute for me to download, but this was on my work wifi, which is actually pretty robust. Others here in the office are seeing a similar download speed. Whole update took just a few minutes, including install and restart.
Download took 30 seconds with FibreOp wifi.
Download took about five or so minutes, and a good ‘nother five for install and reboot to final. Progress bar spent a lot of time just sitting there, and that was a small scare. I would like to see a verbose mode on the iPhone sometimes.
Interesting. Clearly, they’re just pushing a delta file out to the phones over Wi-Fi, whereas what you download on iTunes would be a complete installation, so you can use the “reset” functionality if you want.

Crikey, Siri was having troubles with the Aussie accent? 🙂
So here’s my question: How will the vast majority of iPhone users who don’t read tech blogs find out about this update? Do they receive a notification?
Good question. If they plug it into their iTunes, they’ll find out. No idea about over-the-air.

Very good point.
Apple needs to notify users somehow, push notification of some sort?
Have returned to my house and been connected to wifi for an hour now, still no notification from Apple of an update. I am going to wait it out and see.
Scratch that. After being on Wi-Fi for a while AND plugging my phone in to power, I received a push notification to update. Here are two screenshots, if you care to see.

Imagine the savings in bandwidth for the millions of users on iOS 5!
After the (OTA) upgrade on my 3GS, I missed a phone call and the phone-app would crash upon launching.
Had to do a full reboot.
I must say that a crashing phone app on a phone is not something I want to experience again. Ever.
Blah blah blah. You cackling hens over the minutia of this update is hilarious and all but…
I’m far more interested in the battery fix. So far so good I think. My phone could rip thru a charge for no apparent reason, and hope this does the trick to make performance at least in par with my previous 4 which I was extremely happy with. I’m in the road once again and the update was an awesome sight to see!
No, what is truly hilarious are your efforts to ride in here atop your white steed—its nostrils flaring in the morning mist—have your horse rear up, and posture as if you are some sort of “Big Picture” sorta guy by suggesting that everyone else are but little minions because they discuss technical details.
Pardon me, but your Great Shadow©™® blocketh the sunlight for the little people down below near your horse’s hoofs.
BRAVO, Greg L. Gold!
What about Safari crashes? Any fix there? That is been a big issue with IOS 5
I wouldn’t suspect Safari itself, but would instead suspect it is the fault of another app that leaves bit-rot behind that trips up Safari.
Agree. Have never had a Safari crash under iOS 5, and use it a lot.
