RUMOR: Apple prepping AirPlay Mirroring, iMessage app for Macintosh

“Sources familiar with the future of Mac OS X say that AirPlay Mirroring and an iMessage application are currently in development,” Mark Gurman reports for 9to5Mac. “Although neither project may see the light of day, they are definitely on the table for release in future versions of OS X Lion.”

“AirPlay Mirroring for the Mac will allow a user to wirelessly mirror exactly what is shown on their Mac’s display to an Apple TV connected to a projector, television, or external monitor,” Gurman reports. “Sources are saying that a decision on whether or not iMessage will be released as a standalone product or as an integrated featured into iChat has not been finalized.”

  1. ““AirPlay Mirroring for the Mac will allow a user to wirelessly mirror exactly what is shown on their Mac’s display to an Apple TV”

Just what the doctor ordered !

  2. The fragmentation of Apple chat clients has baffled me for a long time. iChat, FaceTime, iMessage… They really need to bring them all under one umbrella that does voice, video, text and even document and screen sharing.

    1. Absolutely! I mean if anyone can do it cleanly, it should be Apple – right?!

Whilst we’re at it, could an Airplay for the Mac also mirror what’s on your mobile device on your Mac screen? Or would that be treading on the toes of developers who release versions of their mobile Apps on the Mac App Store?

  3. Normally I would prefer to have everything under one app, but unless they’re going to add iChat features to iMessage on iOS, and in turn replace iChat with iMessage on Macs, I would prefer that functionality correspond to the same apps across the platforms.

    1. Hmmm… I would like to see everything bundled into one app. With iMessage, they combined iMessage with the Text Message app, and the app knows to switch back and forth. Also, when I have had poor data coverage, I’m able to “Resend as text message”, so they have the technology to combine functionality into a single app. I am very curious to see what they do with it on the Mac. I think that it’s a very safe bet to assume that iMessage is coming to the Mac. And soon.

  4. I don’t see why AirPlay Mirroring for Macs is taking as long as it is. I’d figure that most Intel Macs certainly have enough processing power to handle it. I’d been using a long A/V cable for years and now maybe I can dump it.

  5. Definitely could do with this. My MacMini is my media center and is hooked up to the TV. It also is my DVD player since my BluRay player stopped playing DVDs. Now the Mini DVD is not working (Forgot to extend warranty!). Therefore it would be great to be able to stream to my Apple TV from my MBP or wife’s MB.
This is a slam dunk unless Apple have an ulterior motive for not doing so.

    1. You can already do this via Home Sharing. If all devices are signed into the same AppleID and Home Sharing is turned on, you can stream content from other device’s iTunes Libraries to AppleTV. This includes Macs, iDevices, MacBooks, etc.

  6. They already had the name iChat. I never understood why messages, FaceTime, iMessage were not all part of iChat. iChat seemed like the perfect name for ios and mac messaging.
