JP Morgan: No tail-off in iPhone 4S demand following initial pre-order surge

“One million first-day iPhone 4S preorders was just the beginning,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“Early Monday morning, Apple announced that preorders of the iPhone 4S topped one million in the device’s first 24 hours of availability, easily surpassing the previous record of 600,000 for the iPhone 4,” Paczkowski reports. “While it’s obviously too early to say definitively, it’s already starting to look like fourth-quarter iPhone estimates are too conservative.”

Paczkowski reports, “According to analysts, demand for the 4S has essentially been unceasing since preorders began. ‘Our conversations with industry contacts suggest that demand has not waned following the initial surge of pre- orders,’ says J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. ‘There has been no tail-off in order activity…'”

    1. Hi Cubert, how are you my friend? I’d like to tell you a story about Apple, me and the iPhone. Got a minute?

My iPhone 4 developed a small fault – the wake/standby button was balky – it was stuck and wouldn’t register finger pressure. I took it in and Apple replaced it with a brand new unit. I’m one of Apple’s biggest fans, an objective one who wouldn’t hesitate speaking my mind, but didn’t in my wildest dreams think that Apple would go the extra mile for me.

      Thanks for listening.

  1. The stock is on a monster run as a result these last two days! Nice thing is the uncertainty about Steve Jobs health is no longer an issue with the stock (not that I wouldn’t prefer having Jobs around). We shouldn’t see the dips we’ve been seeing again or as severe.

Though some dopey anal-ysts are trying to paint iP4s sales as sympathy buys for Steve Job’s passing. No, it’s because it’s a great phone! Always looking for a false angle (and web hits) these idiots.

    1. I couldn’t believe my brother-in-law’s BB Torch has a soft keyboard AND slides up for the BB keyboard.

He and I ordered our iPhone 4s at the same time Sunday night. Gazelle gave him $150 for his phone. Nice! & My son’s getting my “2-yr-old” iPhone 4. (he’s as excited as I am!)

      1. Oh yeah, and Siri was the feature than sealed the deal. I hadn’t played with the Siri app much, but he and I fiddled with it this weekend and were blown away.

I DEFINITELY think they should keep Siri as an app on the App Store as a “lite” version with the current functionality. Then pitch, “To take full advantage of all of Siri’s functions, get the iPhone 4S.” This way, hold-outs and skeptics will be able to get a taste, and there will be more input for Siri to “learn”.

        1. It’s been removed from the app store. The app has been giving a message that it will stop working on Oct. 15. I emailed Tim Cook about this and am pretty sure he’ll agree with me. 😉

        1. That’s just what I hear as the going hater line. I got mine at launch or just after. I also am one if the fortunate AT&T customers that qualified for the full discount on the 4S, even though it’s been only about 15-16 mos. I must pay them too much.

  2. I placed an order – first iPhone for me. My other Apple devices have been missing an iPhone in their family. I really hope that I utilize it to the fullest.

I am not replacing another phone. I’ve just gone without a personal mobile phone for about five years.

  3. So, “iPhone estimates are too conservative” and “easily surpassing”. I have heard this before. If this is so (AGAIN) and the iPhone is more than HALF of Apple’s sales, wouldn’t that mean that they are (AGAIN) “conservative” on Apple’s quarterly sales and next year’s sales again. Maybe that should be updated and fixed (AGAIN).

  4. Apple have almost of full quarter with the new iPhone. How many they can sell will depend on the shipping volume (as usual). We will see how the wait times change over the next month which should give us a good indication how apple are coping with demand.
The unknown factor will be the cheaper and older models. These are already tamped up and are also in the inventory channel to some degree.

      1. Indeed.
But I like to believe that either Jobs himself gave the go for the event (“…Dead or alive – it doesn’t matter, you wimps!”), or they were thinking of him as an example:
        He never bailed.
He stood in front of the Cupertino City Council just four months ago. By then, his friends were probably already begging him for Farewell-Dinners!
Others go to Hawaii or Vegas, he kept working till the very end.
Still, it must have been a nightmare for those who were so close to him (Forstall came from NeXT for example).

        1. I like Scott a lot, I was hoping he would be running the show, but Cook makes sense. Scott should be more involved in the keynotes now though I think. He has personality and his enthusiasm is infectious and genuine. Not a big fan of Phil, he comes off as a fake marketing guy too much.

        2. Yeah I think Scott is great at giving presentations. Also I want to see more presentations by the iMovie guy (can’t remember his name) because he’s well…cute lol, I know it’s very shallow.

  5. I think Apple was able to book a lot more pre orders, but they are leaving room for future releases.
I mean, preorders were limited, if they allow to more preorders they could easily top 2 millions, but then, if the iPhone 5 has less than 2 million pre orders, people will think it is worse or iPhone is starting to lose momentum.
Just an humble opinion, I got nothing else to do 🙁
